We have seen a number of teens in the last few months with joint or muscle pain. This is quite a common complaint among this age group usually associated with a growth spurt. With a growth spurt, muscles can get really tight due to the faster growth of the bones, leading to sore muscles and joints.

Thankfully we can assist in this process through specific strength and stretching protocols.

Our youth strength and conditioning program begins on the 11th of July which will address some of the problems caused by the growth spurt.

Can sprint times be improved?

It’s sad there are still so many myths around this topic. For sure, there is a genetic element to it, that means it’s very unlikely that most of us will have the ability to end up like Usain Bolt. But that does not mean that your sprint times cannot improve from where they are currently at.

With proper technique training and appropriate programming anyone can improve the 2 main elements of sprinting, acceleration and top end speed. For example, we improved 40m sprint time with a League of Ireland football squad by an average of 0.16 sec over an 8-week period. This was achieved mainly through proper programming as very little technique training was used.

Unfortunately, most of the sprint training we see in team sports is really poor and ends up being a speed endurance session aimed at making players tired rather than being aimed at improving sprint times.
