Some great sessions recently with one of my youngest regular climbers. Thea is only 6 years old and shows some great promise and no doubt will be climbing harder than I am in no time. Looking forward to developing her climbing in upcoming sessions.

Going through some old photos and I stumbled across this. This is the Lightning Oak at and not only is this tree ancient and steeped in history along with its surroundings, it is also massive. To give you a sense of scale the stem is at least 2 meters in diameter, and if plucky viewers can spot me in the canopy, you can see just how much space it covers.

This was taken in 2021 during the schools field weekend where pupils climb the tree through and was the last time it was climbed by pupils. Due to disease, age, and being struck by lightning (again) we no longer climb it. There are other magnificent trees surrounding the Lightning Oak but it overlooks the rest by a country mile.

With the weather getting very wet, getting outdoors has been difficult. But on a decent day for a bushcraft session we had young people turn sticks into whistles.

This was a great method to teach young people the use of tools such as knives and saws, resilience and trusting a process, responsibility and they get a nifty whistle at the end of it.

Today’s lunch consists of seed and fruit crackers, homemade plum, apple and green tomato chutney, smoked cheddar, double Gloucester and a le roule. All whilst up a tree enjoying the garden views of 🌳

A hot day led us to do some bushcraft by the water learning hot to make water filters using bottles and materials around us. After filtering we boiled to the water to ensure any nastiness that might have come through have been killed.

A great day of weaseling combined with ice cream making🍦A great finish to a day of exploring the smallest gaps around Higgar Tor. See recipe below if you want to try it yourself (doesn’t have to be done in the Peak but does make it taste better).

Ice cream maker:
2 zip lock bags
Bag of ice
Lots of salt

Ice cream ingredients:
500ml heavy/double cream
50g of sugar
Flavour of your choice (we did 1 teaspoon of vanilla essence)

1. Put all ice cream ingredients in a bag, seal well (check for leaks) and mix.
2. Fill half of other zip lock bag with ice and a load of salt (this lowers freezing point of ice by breaking the bonds that hold it together (Mexo Bendo from GCSE science) and makes the ice colder)
3. Put ice cream bag in ice bag and add more ice and salt.
4. Seal and churn until desired consistency (takes about 15 minutes). As the ice melts water can be drained and more ice and salt added. A towel/tshirt is good to ensure your hands don’t get too cold.
5. Once desired consistency achieved, take ice cream bag out of ice bag and give it a rinse of any salt water and serve! Super simple and is a great team building activity to churn the ice cream.

No week is ever the same, last week started off with a bike ride with young people looking at flora and forna, followed by a climbing session at a youth centre. Tree climbing with curious peacock looking on. And a climbing session at Bamford edge with the iconic view of the Edale Cement works and the Edale skyline. No doubt next week will be completely different.

A great day yesterday running a site specific climbing wall assessment for . A great, new facility in Salford offering a safe space for young people to learn, try new things and create a community. All those taking part in the assessment passed with flying colours.
