Resilience is often described as the ability to bounce back. Maybe this is becoming too simplistic for the continual pressures we face in modern life.

But what if it is about more than just bouncing back?

What if we make it about using our experiences to grow stronger, identifying a better version of ourselves that we want to move forward with? When we take this extra step, then we not only meet the demands of the moment, but also can become even more resilient for future challenges.

One of the interesting features of this World Cup has been seeing smaller nations compete better against the traditional powerhouses.

One change are the hydration breaks, around 20–25 minutes into each half, effectively turn a 90-minute game into four shorter periods of play.
There is a powerful lesson in that.

Teams and individuals can sustain effort and concentration when they know there will be opportunities to pause, recover, reflect, and adjust. The target becomes getting through the next phase, not carrying the weight of the entire challenge at once.

Whether leading teams through change or facing our own difficult seasons in life, breaking big campaigns or projects into smaller, manageable stages can help us maintain belief, energy, and momentum.

Resilience is often built one small step at a time.

As the UK marks Armed Forces Day, I reflect with immense pride and gratitude on 42 years of service in the Royal Navy.

It was a career filled with adventure, travel, learning, and lifelong camaraderie. I was privileged to have unique experiences around the world, to serve alongside many remarkable people, and create great friendships that stood the test of time. I also remember with sadness and gratitude those who are no longer with us.

Serving our country is both a privilege and an honour. Yet it also brings sacrifices — not just for those in uniform, but also for the families, friends, and those supporting the services.

Today, I recognise, respect, and thank those who currently serve, our veterans, and all who stand beside them.

Happy Armed Forces Day.

Deeply saddened to hear about the tragic loss of life in the Royal Navy Commando Squadron helicopter crash.

My thoughts to the families, friends, and our wider ‘Junglies’ community who will all be shocked and grieving.

Today is a solemn reminder of the risks our service personnel face in the course of protecting and serving others.

Rest in peace. 🫡🇬🇧

Whilst almost overwhelmed by all the birthday messages I received last week — it was hugely appreciated.

One thing the years have reinforced is that some of the strongest lifelong friendships come from shared service, shared pressure, and shared experiences — whether through the armed forces or other organisations where people truly work together.

Decades later, those bonds still matter. Just shows the power of a message to old colleagues.

A good day, batteries recharged, and renewed energy for me to help others make the most of their days!

We can’t all be great at everything, but we can all be good at something.
Though the key point is to keep trying to develop.
What you get by achieving goals, is less important than what you learn from pursuing those goals.
