To get the most out of a person and to get the most out of an athlete accept them as a whole.

Find out their natural and existing strengths and make them so confident in these attributes they believe they have the potential to be the very best.

Too many coaches / parents publicly highlight failures and weaknesses to their children - this is in my opinion why so many young athletes don’t succeed or at least reach their potential.

As as coach only create positive self images- this needs to be deliberate and extensive. The other stuff will work itself out over time, and can be celebrated when progress is achieved.

I’m sure many people will disagree with this philosophy, but think about it, how can you overcome adversity if you are not a confident individual.

It’s your job as a coach to create an environment where any lacking skills knowledge and physical attributes are developed. I’m not saying don’t set targets on weaker areas, you need to do this - I’m saying be very careful about the language you use, celebrate success and don’t highlight mistakes.

Do you really think a talented athlete needs to be told they missed an open goal or should have made a pass or isn’t quick enough - they’ll know. If you highlight a mistake or weakness as a coach or a parent you are just adding unneeded emotional baggage that will stop them from progressing. Remember they will constantly looking for your approval- it’s your responsibility to give it to them - every single time, no matter the result.
