Reposting one our Tuesday tips with Bart on a hot day like today! ☀️
Here is the full post:
Good morning all,
My name is Bart and I have just joined the team here at Total Fitness! I am currently qualifying to become a personal trainer. One of things I am most interested in and passionate about is nutrition. So, I thought with the weather being so hot at the moment, a good opportunity to talk about hydration!
We all know that hydration is important, especially in relation to exercise. But what does staying hydrated look like, especially in the hot temperatures that we are experiencing at the moment?
The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) has several hydration guidelines that they recommend to those exercising, especially in warmer conditions. This is because research suggests that 1% dehydration can make exercise feel up to 10% harder than it otherwise would be, along with the potential health risks! These guidelines can become complicated quickly so below are the basic, simple points that we would recommend to follow in around your training sessions during the hot weather:
- Drink a glass of water before you train and add some salt to your pre workout meal.
- During your session, aim to drink around half a litre of water per hour and if training for longer, maybe consider an electrolyte tablet (particularly if you are a heavy sweater) and a carb source, such as a Lucozade.
- Following your session, make sure to drink plenty to replace lost fluids through sweat.
This will give your body the fluids and electrolytes it needs to remain hydrated and for you to perform at your best!
If you have any questions on the above, please do not hesitate to speak to myself or a member of the team!
Additionally, let us know if there are any other areas of food or nutrition that you would like to see more information on!
