MAKE NECK TRAINING GREAT AGAIN. 🇬🇧 🇪🇺
Simple message to highlight the importance of neck training.
Most train upper, lower, have chest days, back days, leg days, arm days, BUT who trains the neck?
If you want a fully functioning body for everyday life, improved sporting performance, prevention injuries or reduction in pain, then neck training needs to be on your list.
The neck responds well to so many modalities of training, light high reps, heavy low reps, isometric, rotation and flexion, so it tough to get bored or add variety.

Neck injuries are common in jiu-jitsu.

That’s mostly because people don’t know how to properly train it.

So they avoid it all together.

Until they hear a pop and their right arm goes numb.

Then it’s a few months off and constantly asking people not to mess with their neck in fear that it will flare back up. That’s if they return at all.

The truth is that most rehab will get you out of pain but it won’t help when you get back on the mat.

This is bc in rehab, you either stretch the neck with minimal to no resistance and or train it in mostly static positions.

This doesn’t help you when someone is cranking a guillotine or cross facing you.

The solution?

Train your neck properly, through ranges of motion while progressively overloading it.

This helps you strengthen your neck in the positions you ACTUALLY need it.

Start doing this and not only will your neck injuries decrease but you’ll get actually get better at jiu-jitsu bc you’ll be able to use your head to create leverage over your people.

Ah, the neck! Often taken for granted, it’s more than just a hinge to bob our heads. It’s high time we treat it to its own exercise regime, much like any prized muscle group. A niggling stiffness is oftentimes a signal of hidden frailty, rather than sheer tautness. Strengthening and loading the neck is essential to dispel any common aches and pains.

1️⃣ Prioritise a well-rounded neck workout regime for optimal performance.
2️⃣ Underlying weakness, not tension, often masquerades as stiffness.
3️⃣ Alleviate discomfort by focusing on strength and support.
4️⃣ Incorporate a disciplined strategy to reinforce your neck region, preventing undue strain and future grumbles.
5️⃣ Take heed if your neck plays the part of a troublesome companion.

Remember, a resolute and resilient neck is indeed a gentleman’s or lady’s crowning glory. Cheerio and here’s to a neck that’s as robust as it is graceful! 👊🏼

I’ve been grappling in some form or another since I was 11 years old. Over those years my neck has taken an absolute beating. This is how I keep it strong and stay on the mat at 40 years old.
