While Local Radio continues to die, perversely, Community Radio continues to thrive in many areas of the UK often supported by local councils.

I wonder if Rugby Borough Council or West Northamptonshire Council ever regret not supporting our project?

Does anyone miss us?

We had a great time setting up and producing this project. We achieved so much with the little support we received from local councils.

We had a great team of volunteers who gave their time, money and equipment for free to 'make it happen'. It was a lot of work and a very expensive venture for us to pay out of our own pockets.

Do we regret it? Certainly not! In fact we often look at the direction off the BBC's local radio policy and the successes of similar projects where their local councils gifted studio space and fully supported them etc. Almost all of them achieved the worldly heights of DAB transmission. It was within our grasp, and there is certainly the demand for it!

Never say never, we may be back. In the meantime, why not delve into our audio archives and have a listen to how a handful of local people developed a professional sounding radio station from their bedrooms....much better listening than the generic national stations!

The BBC's 100th anniversary has been marked in the town that enabled it to make nationwide radio broadcasts.

Opening on 27 July 1925, the Daventry Transmitter was the world's first long wave transmitting station.
Known as 5XX, it was on Borough Hill in the Northamptonshire town and its first transmission was with the a poem called "Daventry Calling...".
Sophie Good from the town's museum said: "Daventry has got a strong affiliation with the BBC."

The BBC chose the position so the transmitter could cover the maximum land area.

It brought the total audience within listening distance to 94% of the population.

When it opened, the poem by Alfred Noyes was followed by speeches from the postmaster general and the mayor of Daventry, introduced by Lord Gainford, BBC Chairman.

The then Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin sent a message, published in the Radio Times, which said he saw "Daventry as another milestone on the road to the social betterment of our people".

In December 1932, the Empire Short Wave Service, which became the BBC World Service, began with broadcasts from Borough Hill.

It was the first broadcast to the Empire from the UK.

Daventry saw continuous use until 1992 and at its peak had more than 40 masts and towers.

It now only has a single mast which is part of the BBC National DAB network.

To mark the BBC 100th anniversary Daventry Museum has an exhibition called A Centenary of Sights and Sounds.

It includes items from the Borough Hill site and contributions from people in the town who used to work there.

Ms Good said the transmitter "had a significant impact on the town".

"It was the first high power long wave broadcasting station and the whole world started talking about Daventry," she said.

The exhibition runs until December to take in the 90th anniversary of the Empire Short Wave Service.

NEW BAR AND RESTAURANT COMING SOON FROM THE OWNERS OF THE ALACATI GRILL.

Pammy and Ata announce the takeover of the once popular Caseys Club in the following statement.

The new place is very old. This building belonged to the Holy Cross Church which was built in 1752. The Abbey which we now have was used by the monks then later as a Church of England School then as a Service Men’s Club and recently as Casey’s Club and now Our very own Pasha’s Bar! What a history! I do love the history of places in the UK. So interesting! Ata and I have taken on this. The downstairs will be used as a pub. There is a separate space to play darts, pool table and a lovely bar area where you can sit have a drink, order nibbles and light bar food. The upstairs which was used for wedding receptions, birthday celebrations etc is currently being renovated. The upstairs space is beautiful with high ceilings and beautiful huge church like windows. We will use this as a restaurant, small events etc. The people of Daventry and beyond can come and enjoy. Please like and share. I will be updating on the opening details. Hopefully the pub downstairs will be opened by the end of November just in time for my birthday! Thank you for all your support.❤️❤️❤️❤️
Please like and us, our new place. Pasha’s Bar and Restaurant. Please share too! Thank you. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
