Metabolic training for competition
Metabolic work is great for building muscle and burning fat all whilst increasing work capacity and fitness
It works on different energy pathways through being an all over training protocol using resistance (weights) at high intensity and will cause an increase reactive power and endurance so you can fire on all cylinders for longer .
This can be done by using the big lifts (squat, bench, deadlift, clean, sn**ch) or using variables of them and there movement patterns within the metabolic session for example sumo deadlift or banded kettlebell swing .
These type of workouts vary depending on the specificity to an energy system that you want, however as they generally are good at working all they mainly consist of high intensity exercise with short rest periods. For example working maximal on a sprint or dead (with form) for 10s max with 30-40s rest
However there is a medium intensity way in which you work for time with reps and rest is similar. For example a deadlift for 10 reps onto prowlers press for 5 and repeat for 3-5 minutes have half time chose rest and go again

Brilliant squad session on Saturday with people travelling from all over to partake in the session
Some lovely work on positioning in kata and the intricateness of certain movements, followed by some kumite nuggets. Not to mention a tonne of drilling with graft for some specific conditioning .
Great work all, see you in June for another 👊🏻

Punching Power
To increase punching power we must increase overall strength in the body, it starts with generating force through the legs, connecting with the hip and trunk rotationally, and finish with the arm
You can do this in a mass amount of ways, but in the dojo try using plyometrics, and resistance bands to improve power and thus speed @ Darwen Vale High School

Big Lewis Hamilton gets it! 👊🏻
It’s more than just fighting.

I know what it’s like to feel like an outsider. As a kid I was always last pick for teams in the playground. I was one of only 3 black kids in my school. I know the sadness that comes with feeling like you don’t fit in or not being accepted for who you are. And I know what it’s like to be bullied for it too. At school, I was small, alone and an easy target for the bigger kids. I’d stand up for myself, but was usually outnumbered and didn’t know how to defend myself. I remember sitting in the back of the car as a six-year-old driving home with my dad and step mum, being so sad inside but too embarrassed to tell them.
But deep down I’ve always had self-belief. A positivity that things should and could be better. I knew if I wanted things to change I’d have to be fearless. If my teachers weren’t going to help then I’d have to learn how to defend myself. So, sat in that car, I asked my dad if I could go to karate.
Karate taught me discipline, respect and humility and gave me the confidence to stand up to those bullies, and to stand up for others who were being bullied. This was one of the best feelings once I got to high school, being able to defend others and oppress bullies.
Bullying should not be tolerated, schools must be tough on bullying, and parents, give your kids the tools to be able to defend themselves. And kids, PLEASE don’t stay silent. Don’t hide, or change who you are – EMBRACE WHAT MAKES YOU DIFFERENT and tell your parents and teachers if you’re being bullied. And, if you can, go to defence class.
In the end, though you might not feel it, you are strong. I believe in you. Speak out!

Better Kumite

To be better at kumite you must first understand the basic shape and how to utilise it

Learning your basics is a key factor to being a good fighter. Using kata to produce movement patterns combined together with pace and precision will lead to movements used in kumite. Kata may be more rigid but it builds the foundation of a great kumite

Don’t get caught up in not learning the basics. They are the gateway to furthering your ability

Discipline

I’ve learnt a lot from karate over the years but the biggest thing I’ve learnt is discipline. If it wasn’t for karate and this life lesson I wouldn’t be where I am today and able to pass on this knowledge to our students

Discipline is your biggest friend in achieving any goal. Any one of us can have days with a lack of motivation for training but on them days of de-motivation your biggest chance of success is discipline

It’s about turning up and doing the same thing day in day out that leads towards success on the tatami (Mat). Even if you’re feeling de-motivated get up and be disciplined

If you remain disciplined, do the basics and keep the habits you have built. From this, success will ultimately be yours. This goes for off the tatami too!

Kicking power

Kicking power is a joint effort consisting of flexion and rotation. Without either of these being strong your kick will suffer

If the mobility in your hips is poor you’ll never access your full potential. When we talk about hip mobility it’s not as simple as open a gate, it’s looking at the avenues affecting the area. Lumbar and thoracic spine movement, quad/hamstring tightness and many more

To enhance your kick ability you can use simple exercises that look at general mobility of the hip and trunk. Making sure you do your mobility constantly and not just before training will lead to long term improvement
