Now I'm Mr Budget personified, but even I know that you get what you pay for. So when I treated myself to a novelty "5-in-1 Matchbox, Flint, Mirror, Whistle, Compass", I thought it would be an absolute joke. After all, it cost the princely sum of 50p from a Pound Store. But I'm actually really surprised and would recommend it for anyone in need of a matchbox on a budget. Whilst the flint, mirror and compass were a joke, the whistle maxed out my sound level meter, matching my UST JetScream Floating Whistle (costing £10 more). Whilst the attached matchbox proved to be totally waterproof and floated, matching my professional model (costing £5 more). I'd always recommend having a professional compass, or at least a magnetised needle as an improvisation, over this model, but for 50p if you have any matches you want to keep dry, this is actually a good buy, so don't pass it up.

Site Review: Hook Farm Campsite
Whilst England is great for roaming and free access, with footpaths and rights of access, hard fought for so that you can travel anywhere, finding somewhere to camp for the night and practice bushcraft skills can be a real challenge. Getting a permission isn't easy, there are campsites, but these tend to have lots of facilities and none of the freedom. The exceptions, when you find them, are well worth sharing and remembering. One such place is Hook Farm Campsite in West Hoathly, West Sussex. The site consists of just two fields, both with running water and a lot of porta-loos, nothing else. You can bring or buy wood for a campfire and fires are allowed everywhere on site. Best of all prices are very reasonable at just £10.00 per adult per night, and £5 per child per night. The entire site, especially the lower field, is surprisingly quiet and ideal for recording your bushcraft activities on video. The only drawback is a slight slope to the site, but if you arrive early enough you can have the pick of the best level pitches.

New laws coming in for the UK. Do keep an eye on it because changes will occur very soon and it may catch quite a few lawful people out, who weren't aware that items that could be legally owned before, will no longer be legal, and will need to be destroyed.
