Always learning 💛
Today I spent the day continuing my education with Jeannie Di Bon, studying The Integral Movement Method for Hypermobility.
We explored hypermobility in much more depth, including pain mechanisms, biomechanics, the nervous system and, importantly, how movement and exercise can be adapted to better support people with hypermobile bodies.
We also spent time learning more about Ehlers Danlos syndromes (EDS) and the wider picture of living with chronic illness and complex conditions, and how these can affect someone’s experience of pain, fatigue, movement and exercise.
One of the things I love about Pilates is that there really is no “one size fits all” approach. Two people can walk into a class with completely different bodies, histories, strengths and challenges, and understanding those differences helps me to teach the person in front of me, rather than simply teach an exercise.
Hypermobility is something I see regularly within my work, I also have it myself and it’s an area where thoughtful, appropriate movement can be incredibly valuable. It isn’t simply about being “really flexible”. Stability, strength, control, confidence in movement and understanding pain can all play an important part.
After many years of teaching, I still genuinely love learning more about our amazing bodies and bringing that knowledge back into my classes and 1:1 sessions to help you all as best I can 🌟
What a day! 🧘🏻♀️ 🧠 📚😁
