By completing the challenge at home they can earn:

I have “borrowed” this from another instructor but it is absolutely true

People see a Taekwondo coach for a few hours on the mat each week.

What they don’t see is the dozens of roles that come with it.

A coach isn’t just someone who holds pads.
One minute you’re a teacher, the next a motivator.
Then a disciplinarian, a mentor, a confidence-builder, a counsellor.
Sometimes a referee. Sometimes a problem-solver. Sometimes the calm voice when someone’s ready to quit.

Behind the scenes? That’s another job entirely.

Planning sessions weeks in advance.
Personal development and education.
Adapting training for different ages, abilities, injuries, confidence levels.
Organising seminars, liaising with masters, booking venues, promoting them properly so students actually get value.
Ordering kit, doboks, belts, safety gear.. and making sure it’s correct, approved, and arrives on time.
Preparing students for gradings and competitions, travelling, coaching ringside, managing nerves, wins, losses, tears, and triumphs.
Keeping standards high. Keeping the club running. Keeping everyone safe.

All of that takes commitment. Time. Energy. Care. Patience!

And it’s done because we genuinely want our students to grow – not just in Taekwondo, but as people.

But here’s the honest part that doesn’t get said enough:

That commitment has to be reciprocated.

Progress doesn’t come from turning up “when it suits.”
Confidence isn’t built through half-effort.
Respect, discipline, and skill don’t grow without consistency and intent.

A coach can open the door, guide the path, and walk alongside you... but the student still has to step forward.

When that commitment flows both ways, that’s when something special happens.
You will get back, exactly what you put in... But be prepared, because that doesn't just happen overnight!
That’s when a club becomes more than a timetable.
That’s when Free Spirit becomes what it’s meant to be.
