End of season 2021-22 report

So we’ve taken a week or so to sit back and reflect on the season just gone, and what an incredible season the boys have had.
If ever the cliche ‘roller-coaster’ could describe the last 11 months, then this is it. 🎢

Some could say we’ve lacked consistency, others could argue that not being able to field the same team more than 2-3 weeks in a row has been to blame, but the reality is at this age, the pressure of exams, school and life, has been relentless for the boys and everyone associated at the club!

As such we are, and remain, incredibly proud of the team and their achievements.
Not just in their ongoing development as players but as all round decent young men.

Finishing 5th with 3 games still to play, reaching both our divisional cup finals, 🏆🏆 wining one and very narrowly missing out on the other by a single goal, and continuing to develop new & existing boys, and their passion & love for football.

Being the only team outside the top 3 to beat all the top 3 sides, shows us that on our day we can compete & contend with anyone and that the way we try to play football will ultimately get the right results.

Over the course of the season we’ve had 6 new lads come in, having never kicked a ball competitively before, with 4 becoming integral parts of the team.
We’ve had other boys who have been with us since the age of 5-6, regularly start training with the u20’s setup, with 1 of them now making that enormous step up to sign for them for the coming season.
An outstanding achievement. 🌟

So, as a club dedicated to development at all levels, what we’ve seen and done this season is hands-down outstanding, and we’re so proud of everyone involved.

We simply can’t thank the players enough for their dedication, effort and commitment over the course of this season.
Parents and careers too, have been simply outstanding in their support of the boys and the team, in sometimes the most challenging of conditions.

The reality for everyone now is that some of the boys are moving on, up and away from football and while we’re incredibly sad, we’ve equally never been more proud and focused on what we do and the developmental project that is next season.

With coach Chris taking a step back after some incredible years with us, (and some amazing photos 📸), we welcome back ‘home-lad’ Davie Duncanson to the Star family, who brings with him a wealth of experience and football knowledge.

We’ve already started trials for next season that will bolster our fantastic remaining squad, and the overall potential is breathtaking.
The future remains ever bright and we can’t wait to get back to pre-season and further trial sessions.

We’re on a short break just now but the planning never stops.
In the next few weeks we’ll hold our end of season awards and farewells, (we never say goodbye), of which we’ll issue details shortly.

But pre-season will start on 12th July and we can’t wait to see you then.

The preparation for next season starts now….

After the success of 2 cup finals and a lovely shiny trophy 🏆 we’ve already got our sights on next season and developing our players into an even stronger team.

Newtongrange Star Youth 0 (0) v (1) 1 Leith Athletic

Thanks to Allan, all the coaches, and the boys from Leith for an incredibly competitive and close Cup Final this evening.
Well done guys, and congratulations 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Well it just wasn’t to be tonight.
So very close and yet so far!

A goal from a corner in the 26th minute, (that was initially saved brilliantly by Kenzie but then turned in at the right hand post), the only goal to separate the teams.
Despite numerous chances, (at both ends to be fair), we just couldn’t manage to find an equaliser.
So gutted for the 12 boys who could make it tonight and play, as they gave it their all.
But to be honest we’re just so proud of them, their teamwork and attitude. The way they’ve conducted themselves all season, has been phenomenal. Most importantly they never quit and never give up.
They are the reason we do this and the reason we will continue to do this.

Each and everyone of them can hold their heads high.

Good luck to Leith in their chase for the Division. 🤝

Cockenzie Star 1 (1) v (0) 1 Newtongrange star youth

Thanks to Jamie and the boys from Cockenzie for hosting us today, always appreciated. 🤝

Well another tough game against a team that has improved significantly over the course of the season, so well done boys, certainly made for a very close game. 👏🏻

Yes, we were missing a few today but credit to Cockenzie who made us work very hard for the draw.
Taking the lead late on in a competitive first half, it reminded us that we really need to take our chances when presented! The first half finished 1-0.

We changed things slightly in the 2nd half and started to get a foothold in the game, especially through the middle of the pitch.
However, it took us until the 62nd min to get a deserved equaliser.
A lovely free kick swung-in from Fraser, over on the right, saw skipper Jay loose his marker in the penalty area, rise and nod the ball passed their keeper. Outstanding 1-1 🌟

The game remained very close but our lack of chances in the final third, prevented us from going on to win the game.

And of course if it wasn’t for the return of our amazing keeper Kenzie, we would have walked away with nothing!
An outstanding penalty save 5 minutes from time ensuring that we came away with a deserved point. 🌟

The boys were a bit flat after the game, feeling they should’ve come away with more, however we must now build towards our 2nd final of the season and likely our final game of the season.

Wednesday night sees us travel across town for our league cup final against Leith.
If it’s anything like our last 3 games this season, it should be an absolute cracker!

7pm at the Gyle Recreation park.
