Married couple Alex and Liz Herriot, members of the Newtongrange Pétanque Club (NPC) have just returned triumphantly from Weston-Super-Mare.

The couple were there representing Scotland as part of a Scottish Pétanque Association team taking part in the England Inter-Regional Pétanque Challenge. The challenge is open to all English regions with Scotland and Wales being invited too.

This year there were 208 teams of four participating. Play took place across 110 pistes with the players all competing in 11 games over two days.

After those two gruelling days of tough competition it was Scotland that came through victorious. Huge congratulations to Alex and Liz and the other members of the Scotland teams.

Alex and Liz have been members of NPC since its inception a mere four years ago and have only being playing for that length of time. In this challenge competition they were up against some of the best players in the UK with much more experience than them, so this is a fantastic result.

Liz Herriot's final shot in the final game v Southern. The score at this point is Southern 10 v 10 Scotland, Southern are holding 1 point, Southern are out of boules Liz shoots out Southerns boule and her boule stays which also brings Kathleen Rankin's boule into play so Scotland are now holding 2 points then Ann Rowan of East Lothian points in to make it a memorable 10-13 victory for Scotland. 🏆🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏆🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏆🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏆🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

What an exciting time; Newtongrange’s Welfare Park will be 100 years old on September the 19th 2026. Over the course of 100 years much has happened in the park, but for the last four years Newtongrange Pétanque Club (NPC) has been part of the fabric of the park so we will be celebrating this anniversary of the park that welcomed our Pètanque Pistes to be a part of it.

On the 19th of September you will find members of NPC on the club pistes located near to the fence just down from the Pavillion Café. They will be there to welcome you and, if you wish, give you a little introduction to the game of Pétanque. It is a social game, playable by anybody, a game of skill that anybody can learn. It’s a simple game, throw a steel ball, known as a boule, at a small wooden ball, known as a cochonet or a coche or a jack, and try to be the closest to the coche and score a point. More points if you have more boules closer to the coche than your opponent’s closest boule. The first to reach 13 points wins. We have a great mix of people in our club: young and old, men and women and short and tall. Our youngest member is 12 years old and the oldest is 88.

So why not come along on the 19th and throw a few boules? There will be competitions like throwing a boule into a tyre, get your boule closest to the coche and prizes: medals, coches, club pens and sweets. There will also be a raffle in aid of club funds. All equipment will be provided by the club so you don’t need to bring anything. However, if you are under 18 you will need to bring along a parent or guardian.

We will be there at the pistes from 13:00 until 15:00 don’t miss us, you just might discover a fantastic new hobby.

Did you know that Newtongrange became Scotland’s largest mining village in 1890 with the development of the Lady Victoria Colliery and the sinking if a 1600 foot shaft? The colliery closed in 1981.
