I’m Ben, and I wanted to share a little bit about me and my small family business, Big Game Sports, and hopefully ask for your support. ❤️
Before starting Big Game Sports, I worked as a Personal Trainer and Gym Manager. Sport has always been a huge part of my life, and it’s something I’ve genuinely loved for as long as I can remember.
Unfortunately, in 2023 my life changed when I experienced my first severe episode of paralysis. After recovering from that first attack, I started Big Game Sports in 2024, as I was unable to return to my previous career and wanted to build something around the thing I’ve always been passionate about — sport.
Unfortunately, that wasn't the end of my health problems. I experienced multiple severe paralysis attacks over the following year, which made everyday life and running a business incredibly difficult.
After a long journey, I was finally diagnosed in March 2025 with a rare muscle channelopathy caused by an SCN4A gene mutation.
In simple terms, SCN4A helps control sodium channels in our skeletal muscles, which are responsible for the electrical signals that allow our muscles to contract and relax properly. When there is a mutation in this gene, it can cause overlapping conditions including periodic paralysis, where muscles can suddenly become extremely weak or completely paralysed, and sodium channel myotonia, where muscles can become stiff and have difficulty relaxing after being used.
The severity of the attacks I was experiencing has unfortunately left me permanently disabled.
Even after starting Big Game Sports, things weren't easy. For a long time, something as simple as picking and packing an order could be incredibly difficult for me, especially when I was experiencing attacks and dealing with the effects of my condition.
Thankfully, I'm now receiving the right treatment, and things have started to improve. ❤️
For the first time in a long time, I feel like I can really give Big Game Sports the chance it deserves.
With the help and support of my amazing family, I'm determined to build this business and see where we can take it. It's something I'm incredibly passionate about, and after everything that's happened over the last few years, I'm really excited to finally be able to put my time and energy into growing it. 💙
