Redz Report – Week 7 of the Spring Season.
Another warm day in Redz, as we continued our Spring season, with 20 of our juniors in attendance today.
The warm weather didn’t stop Jack ordering his usual hot chocolate, as he made a start on this match with Freddie, whilst Behroz and Zack looked to complete their outstanding frame from last week.
For the other’s, once the morning’s agenda had been announced, they were split into their relative groups (including a few guest appearance for those in the Pink group) for 2 rounds of our ABC. As seems to be the case most weeks, many made it to the final showcase table to attempt the shootout Blue, but our only successes this morning came from Tedi and Behroz; well done to them both (and I still owe Behroz a Mars Bar for his success).
Following the ABC, the juniors were split into 5 separate teams to take on our Redz Mystery game. The first round proved to be one of the quickest with Darci playing a superb cut on the Blue into pocket 3 for the coaches to announce the win. The turn of the tile offered no bonus, so the round ended with them with 650 points in the bag. The 2nd round saw Lucas and Behroz correctly getting the Yellow in pocket 1 and the final round saw the team of Tedi, Lily and Matt successfully deducing the correct pocket and colour, with their bonus tile giving them only the value of the ball potted, but this was enough to win the overall game; well done to everyone.
As a couple of matches got underway, Jez set up his “Mini-Leagues” with players in teams playing competitive frames as well as learning the ropes as referees. Some great clashes this morning, but in the end the team of Dexter, Noah and Fiona came out on top; huge congratulations to them.
For the challenges today, it was the turn of those in the upper groups and again some good efforts, but no one was able to complete their own challenge this morning. For those taking part, they also took on this month’s Shot to Nothing, with a mixed bag of scores including the only perfect shot of the morning, from Caitlin, successfully potting the Pink and cannoning the Red in baulk to score the maximum 5 points on 1 shot, but our winner this morning scoring on 5 of his 6 shots was Behroz, with a total score of 10. His win secured him an extra ranking point to add to his seasons tally; well done Behroz.
For their 120 challenges, again some great scored posted today, with several players hitting their PB’s. Zack posted a 62, Caitlin a 74, Harvey drew with his best, with an 84, Behroz hit a 90 and Jack hit only the 3rd ton+ of the challenge with a total of 103; amazing.
For the matches today, in the Green group, Sonny took the deciding frame against Lily in his 2 v 1 win with an 18 clearance, though Lily had got herself on the breaks board with a 13. Lucas then took the opening 2 frames against Lily in their match, though again Lily had another 13 break. In the Pink group, Behroz took the final frame against Zack to seal the 3 v 0 win, including breaks of 24 and 15, whilst this was the same scoreline in Fiona’s win over Zack, with a 15 break from Fiona in the last frame. In the Black group, 2 matches today saw Freddie take all 3 frames against Jack and then Max L had a great win over Jack, taking the spoils 2 v 1.
We go again next week, as we approach the final stretch for the Spring term, with only a few outstanding fixtures to complete. The Brown group is already decided, with Max R and Tedi both qualifying for the main event next month and it will be interesting to see who joins them from the other groups, with key matches still left to play.
As always, a huge thanks to our sponsors, Newport City Snooker League, who’s funding will enable us to purchase the medals and trophies for the season’s finale in 4 week’s time.
