When your the wrong side of 40 and your looking back on life, memories of times when leaving school was the greatest thing ever... but inside you were both heart broken and nervous at the same time. You found beer, love and attitude all at once. You cursed the mirror every day that your stubble wouldn’t grow, and you dreaded the thought of cheap trainers and dodgy aftershave.
Then the day came you had to make a decision (any choices at that age would cause a stress and headache that rubber stamped how you felt safe, still attached to mum’s apron strings) pre-season was starting with the Youth rugby team. Oh no! can I do this? these guy’s are built like brick s**t houses, some can chugg beer in under 8 seconds and some got more beard than Gandalf...
You sheepishly arrive at the ground, the laces are still done up from your last U16’s match... your muttering words you couldn’t tell your granny as your fingers are flapping ten to the dozen trying to undo them. You keep looking round to see how many other lost sheep are wandering round in the same nervous daze as you. There is a gathering on the pitch of people all shapes and sizes, the distance from the touchline to the middle of the pitch looks a long lonely walk. There is no skip like Dorothy on the yellow brick road, just a bow of the head and you are stumbling along like a walk of shame.
Suddenly the Coach shouts your name and tells you to hurry, you start to jog but your arms and legs are attached to strings and you prance like Bambi on the ice. Its then it happen’s!!!!
