Clipper weight matters, but so does balance, comfort and the type of clipping youâre doing.
As a general rule, lighter clippers tend to be light-duty machines. Theyâre often easier to handle, quieter and more comfortable for occasional clipping, finer coats, nervous horses or trimming/tidying.
Heavier clippers are usually more medium-duty or heavy-duty, with more power behind them. Theyâre often better suited to thicker coats, Cushingâs coats, cobs, natives or yards clipping several horses.
But comfort is personal. Some people love a lightweight machine, while others prefer the control of a slightly heavier, well-balanced clipper.
If a clipper feels awkward in your hand, your wrist and arm will tire more quickly, making it harder to keep steady pressure and get an clean, even finish.
So donât just choose by weight on paper. Think about the coat, the workload, how long youâll be clipping for and what feels comfortable for you.
What matters most to you? Weight, balance, power, noise, battery life or something else?
