If you knew that something was going to give you improved health, stronger bones, muscles, and a stronger heart, wouldn't you want to start doing it? It has been proven that exercise, in particular strength training, can provide all of this and more.
So what is strength training? Let’s break it down.
Strength training is physical activity that has been designed to help to improve muscular strength and fitness by exercising a muscle or muscle group against an external resistance. This resistance can be resistance machines, resistance bands, dumbbells, kettlebells, or even your own bodyweight.
Are you worried that you're a beginner, or have never done any strength training before? That doesn’t matter! Regular strength training is good for people of all ages and fitness levels to help prevent the natural loss of lean muscle mass that unfortunately comes with aging. It can also benefit people with chronic health conditions, like obesity, diabetes, or a heart condition.
Many resistance training exercises are great for older people as exercises such as the squat or the farmer carry are similiar to sitting down in a chair or carrying heavy shopping bags. Regular resistance training will help allow you to continue to do these things even as you age. Take a moment to think about it. Even once a week for 30 minutes is better than nothing.
If you struggle to get out and exercise or have low motivation, I offer circuit training classes once a week at Warden Park Academy at 6pm on Mondays. One session is free, then £10 a session. Come along and see what it's all about! All levels of ability welcome 🫶🏼
