Am I wrong for refusing to call my teenage daughter 'they' after she suddenly demanded a new identity? I never expected a simple afternoon conversation to tear my family apart. My teenager burst into tears, called me a bigot, and my wife stepped in to tell me I was being awfully insensitive. I know how bad it sounds—a father seemingly rejecting his own child's truth. But there is a lot more to this overnight transformation than just a simple coming out announcement. We were having a normal afternoon when she sat us down and declared she was non-binary. I heard her out calmly at first, trying to understand how she reached this conclusion. The conversation remained civil until I firmly told her I didn't believe she was anything but a woman. I understand that some people truly struggle with who they are inside. But what everyone judging me doesn't know is what she was like growing up, and what I noticed right before this sudden declaration. I just feel like this is a modern way to rebel against parents. I stood my ground, which led to what my wife did next. The sound of my teenager sobbing echoed in the living room as my wife pulled her close.
