In a bold move to “simplify” things for new members and students, we’ve decided to replace the traditional gallery chase measurements with a much more intuitive system. Gone are “½ a yard worse than the last gallery,” “nearly a yard worse,” “a yard worse,” and—our personal favourite—“more than a yard worse than the last gallery.” Instead, we’ve introduced a straightforward numbering system up to 9 which has been successfully introduced by other clubs.

What could possibly go wrong! A gentle life lesson for us all: always check on work taking place. For now, we’ll have to live with it until after the Easter break—but on the bright side, it certainly makes life a little more interesting on court.

The 2026 T&RA Category E Open Championships, took place this weekend 27–29 March here at Wellington Real Tennis Club, and it delivered a great weekend of tennis across both handicap categories.
In the 40–44 handicap draw, fourth seed Wellington’s Mark Harris produced an excellent run of form to take the title. After a hard-fought three-set win over Jamie Tipple from Newmarket in the opening round, Mark continued to build momentum, defeating third seed Bridport's Nick Geere in the final in straight sets (6/4, 6/4). Nick had earlier come through a tight quarter-final against Chris Manson and a semi-final against Ben Geytenbeek, but he was unable to match Mark’s consistency in the final stage.
The 45–49 handicap competition saw second seed Gus Anthony from the Queens Club emerge victorious. Gus progressed confidently through the draw, the only player not to drop a set, and finished with a composed final win over Wellington’s Ian Machin, who had earlier impressed by defeating top seed Clive Turner from Prested and Chris Marks from Falkland Palace... In the final, Gus proved too strong, securing the title with a 6/5, 6/1 victory.
Across both draws, the standard of play was high, with several closely contested three-set matches highlighting the depth of the field.
Overall, a successful championships showcasing competitive and enjoyable real tennis across the Category E field.

The Oratory School hosted the U13 Real Tennis National School Singles on Tuesday 24th March.
Wellington was represented by Zoe Neville, entering the tournament in the penultimate round.
The field was strong, showcasing a high standard of play throughout every four-game set, with Ladies World Champion, Claire Fahey refereeing.
The scores were tight, but 11 wins for the group was enough to see Zoe through to the final group stage.

With Henry Henman taking the helm as referee, the standard of play somehow managed to increase.
Top class tennis was a sight to behold, with Zoe qualifying as 2nd in the last group stage to face tournament favourite, Daniel Morgan in the final.

Wellington got off to an early start, pinching the first game from 40-30.
Seacourt’s top junior responded in force, taking Daniel to an imposing 4-1 lead in this six-game final.
Well drilled tactical play would be the tool of choice for Zoe to pe*****te the sheer power of Daniel’s game.
A few choice manoeuvres and low short chases off the return of serve secured a comeback to 4-4.
The atmosphere built as a cohort of Oratory students gathered to marvel at the level of play, adding to the ambiance as the finalists continued to fight for every point.
A devastating set of serves, most finding the nick, saw Daniel to 5-4 and 40-15 in what could have been the final point of the tournament.
The plucky Wellington player fought back to take the game to deuce and won the advantage point.

Tensions were high as they entered the final game. At 15 all, then 30 all, both players were fully engaged.
An audacious grille secured Wellington to 40-30 and with a newly Wellington coached giraffe serve, an unforced error saw Zoe to victory as the 2026 U13 Real Tennis National School Singles Champion.

A big thank you to Oratory for hosting the event, particularly Claire & Henry for overseeing a long, but exciting day of tennis.
