On Wednesday night I visited Hall Lane to watch Willington v Silksworth Colliery Welfare in the Wearside First Division.
Early advances were made by a decent looking welfare side.
A free kick for Willington was deflected out and a rebound attempt was wildly over shot as the home side attempted to get a foot hold.
9 mins in a reasonable effort from Fisher drew a save from home shot stopper, Gill.
A corner for Silksworth led to the opening goal nicely slotted in by Errington.
Caffry did well to beat 3 Willington as he released a hopeful shot on 13 mins which went astray.
Minutes later, Caffry again caused issues as he looked to poach but Gill smothered the ball nicely.
A nice pass through to Welfare’s Bennett led him to attempt a lobbed shot, but the move did not pay off on 19 mins.
Connolly had a shot which was slightly deflected and saved by the keeper, as the away side continued to pile the pressure.
The impressive looking Thompson for Welfare released a strike which dipped over the bar on 29 mins taking a slight deflection for a corner.
Silksworth were in total control as they passed well and dominated possession, having won several corners and having attempted several goal efforts as they tried to advance further.
On 38 mins another goal did arrive and from of the many corners of the half (I couldn’t confirm who had scored from the angle I viewed the goal, but was either Burlinson or Fisher)
Thompson had a header which just drifted wide on 43 mins as the half time whistle soon approached as the away side went in 0-2 at HT.
The first corner of 2nd period came on 49 minutes but nothing came to fruition as a result for the away team.
A great effort from 25 yards out on 52 mins from Welfare’s Fenton drew a great save from the young keeper, Gill. 2 further corners put Willington under great pressure but they weathered the storm adequately.
Exceptional work from Alderson opened up an opportunity for Thompson whose effort just went wide on 57 mins.
Silksworth did not let up as they looked for a third goal. In fairness, Willington tried as well as they could to shut out the danger but it was clearly a challenge.
Fisher was excellent out on the wing as he dominated throughout the half, as the home side tried to contain his runs forward.
On 63 mins, Willington did have a decent effort but the away keeper held firm.
Sub, Rendahawa looked very bright when he was introduced having 2 efforts on goal in quick succession.
A header for Willo went very close but the visiting keeper was on his metal on 65 mins.
Again , Fisher, who went from strength to strength as the half progressed, was very lively out on the wing.
Some neat work from Rendahawa saw him try to walk the ball into danger but in the end his final effort was punched well clear of the goal
A ball in to Fenton allowed him to slide in for a goal opportunity but the attempt shot over the bar.
A decent drive by Blades was fired in but Gill saved for the home side.
Willington’s Taylor did well pushing forward but found himself with inadequate support to mount an attack.
The home side did have a late attempt for a consolation but the Silksworth keeper pushed the ball out and the resulting corner was defended away.
In the dying embers, the away side got a third goal, unfortunately for Gill, he did nearly get a hand on it but it fell behind him and into the net.
A tough season for Willington as they bow out of the first division leaving them to try next season to earn some success after what has been yet another tumultuous season at Hall Lane.
