πŸ“ On UK motorways, SOS emergency telephones are typically spaced at intervals of approximately 1 mile (1.6 km).

That means if you break down, you should usually be within about half a mile of one in either direction.

Most drivers carry a mobile phone these days, yet those orange SOS emergency telephones still play an important role on our motorways.

Many people drive past them every week without giving them a second thought.
The truth is that one day they could save your life.

πŸ“ž One of the biggest advantages of an SOS telephone is that it connects directly to the motorway control centre.
They immediately know your exact location, which carriageway you are on, and where help needs to be sent.
There is no trying to describe your location while stressed, injured, or standing beside a busy motorway.

πŸš— If your vehicle breaks down on a motorway, the Highway Code advises you to pull onto the hard shoulder, or into an emergency area on a smart motorway if you can safely reach one.

⚠️ Switch on your hazard warning lights.

🚢 Leave the vehicle by the left-hand doors if it is safe to do so and move well away from the carriageway. Stand behind the safety barrier where one is available.

πŸšΆβ€β™‚οΈ If you need to walk to an emergency telephone, stay behind the barrier and face oncoming traffic so you can see any danger approaching.

πŸ“± If you cannot reach an SOS telephone, use your mobile phone. If you are stranded in a live lane on a smart motorway and cannot get to a place of safety, call 999 immediately.

πŸ“ Another fact many drivers do not know is that the emergency telephones are positioned to correspond with the side of the motorway you are travelling on. Using the correct telephone helps emergency services and recovery operators identify your exact location quickly.

Most of us will hopefully never need to use one.
Knowing what they are for before you need them could make all the difference.

Have you ever used an SOS emergency telephone?
What happened?

Fantastic work these people do….

They deliver blood, medical supplies and support emergency services around the clock β€” yet many people have no idea this remarkable volunteer service even exists πŸš‘πŸοΈ Now they're opening their doors to show exactly what they do

🌍 THE DRIVING HABIT THAT COULD SAVE YOU HUNDREDS OF POUNDS A YEAR

When people talk about environmentally friendly driving, the conversation usually turns to electric vehicles.

The reality is that most drivers are still driving petrol, diesel or hybrid cars, and for many people the cost of changing vehicles simply is not realistic right now.

What often gets overlooked is that one of the biggest ways to reduce fuel consumption, lower emissions and save money costs absolutely nothing.

It is simply the way you drive.

Research suggests that eco driving techniques can reduce fuel consumption by between 10% and 15%. For the average driver covering thousands of miles each year, that could mean saving hundreds of pounds in fuel costs without changing vehicles, changing jobs or changing lifestyles.

The biggest difference comes from being smoother.

Harsh acceleration burns fuel unnecessarily. Heavy braking wastes momentum that you have already paid for with fuel. Constantly rushing towards hazards only to brake hard a few seconds later is not making progress. It is simply turning fuel into heat and brake dust.

Good drivers look well ahead, anticipate what is developing and make early decisions. They maintain momentum where it is safe to do so and avoid unnecessary speed changes. Interestingly, these are the exact same habits that make someone a safer driver.

Speed also plays a huge part.

Many drivers assume that if they arrive a few minutes sooner, they have somehow won. What they often do not realise is that fuel consumption rises dramatically at higher speeds. Once you start pushing beyond normal cruising speeds, your vehicle is working much harder just to overcome air resistance. That extra fuel being burned is coming directly out of your wallet.

Something as simple as checking your tyre pressures can also make a difference. Underinflated tyres create more rolling resistance, forcing the engine to work harder. Properly inflated tyres improve fuel efficiency, increase tyre life and improve safety at the same time.

Then there is the boot.

Many cars spend their lives carrying things that have not been used for weeks or even months. Boxes, tools, sports equipment, old shopping bags and all sorts of forgotten items quietly add weight. Every extra kilogram has to be accelerated, braked and carried around wherever you go.

Planning journeys properly can help too. Combining several short trips into one journey, avoiding unnecessary congestion and keeping your vehicle serviced all contribute towards reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

One thing I often teach learners is that good driving is rarely about working harder.

It is about working smarter.
The smoothest drivers are often the safest drivers.
They use less fuel.
They put less wear on their tyres, brakes and clutch.
They create a calmer drive for themselves and everyone around them.
Sometimes saving the environment and saving money involve exactly the same skills.

How many of these eco driving habits do you already use?

Changes to driving test booking happening today. ⚠️

From today (9 June), if you move your driving test, you can only move it to one of the 3 nearest test centres to where it's currently booked.

This is the remaining change we committed to make by the end of Spring 2026:

πŸ“… 31 March β€” test changes limited to 2 per booking

πŸ”’ 12 May β€” only learners can book, change or cancel their own test

πŸ“ 9 June β€” test moves limited to 3 nearest centres

Since 12 May, we've suspended 3605 accounts for breaking the rules and reported apps to app stores for removal. We're not stopping there.

IMPORTANT WARNING FOR LEARNER DRIVERS

If you are using unofficial driving test apps, websites, social media groups, or paying someone online to find you a driving test, you need to read this.

Since 12 May 2026, only the learner driver is allowed to book, change, swap or cancel a car driving test.

The DVSA has made it very clear that learners must not:

❌ Use unofficial apps or websites that scan the driving test booking system

❌ Give their booking details to someone else so they can manage their test

❌ Use people on social media who claim they can find or book earlier tests

If you are caught doing this, the DVSA may:

⚠️ Suspend your ability to manage your test online

⚠️ Restrict you to booking or changing tests by telephone only

⚠️ Cancel your driving test completely

The DVSA has confirmed they are actively monitoring the system and will take action where they believe bookings have not been made legitimately or where their terms and conditions have been breached.

Learners should remember three simple rules:

βœ… Only use the official GOV.UK website

βœ… Never pay anyone on social media to find a test

βœ… Never give your booking details to anyone else

There are genuine learners waiting for tests across the country. The purpose of these changes is to make the booking system fairer for everyone.

If you know a learner driver, please share this with them.

Losing a driving test because of an unofficial app or scammer would be a very expensive mistake.
