Why a whole day for yoga?

International Yoga Day falls on the longest day of the year — the summer solstice — a moment the tradition has always treated as a turning point: maximum light, a time to pause and realign.

The word yoga means to yoke — to unite. That's exactly what Sunday's practice is for: drawing mind, breath and body back into one quiet place.

We'll move through slow Chakra Yin Flow — long, restful holds that work the deep tissue and settle the nervous system — and pranayama, the regulation of the breath. No experience needed. Just come as you are.

Most of us meet yoga through the postures. But in the classical tradition, āsana — the physical practice — is just one of eight limbs.

The word itself means to yoke: to bring mind, breath and body into one steady place. The poses are simply the doorway in.

It's why our classes move slowly, breathe deliberately, and leave room for stillness at the end. We're not chasing the deepest stretch — we're training the quieter mind that the practice was always pointing toward.

Save this for the next time someone says they're "not flexible enough for yoga." Flexibility was never the point.

Sunday is not a day off from your practice.
It's the most important day of your practice.

In the yogic tradition, rest is not laziness.
It is Pratyahara — withdrawal of the senses. Restoration.

Today, I invite you to do one thing:

Sit. Still. For five minutes.
No phone. No to-do list. No planning the week.

Just breathe.
Inhale 4 counts. Hold 2. Exhale 6. Repeat.

Notice what comes up. Don't chase it. Don't push it away.
Just observe.

This is meditation in its simplest form.
And it changes everything — slowly, quietly, completely.

I hear this every week.
"I can't do yoga — I'm not flexible enough."

That's like saying: "I can't go to the gym — I'm not fit enough."

Flexibility is the outcome. Not the entry requirement.

In 25 years of teaching, my best students were the stiffest beginners.
Because they had nowhere to go but forward.

Here's what actually matters when you start:
✅ Willingness to breathe
✅ Willingness to slow down
✅ Willingness to listen to your body

Nothing else.
