CLIENT SPOTLIGHT

Its always a pleasure to work with Tom, he's such a sound bloke, in our most recent block of sessions his goals was to squat over 110kg and bench 70kg for at least one. Well he certainly smashed those goals out the park, he's managed to bench 70kg comfortable for 6 reps and he's managed to squat 125kg (15kg more than his original goal)

Well done mate, you've smashed it.

CLIENT SPOTLIGHT

First off I just want to say a massive well done to Rhys who has worked his arse off the past 3 months and lost a massive 20 kilograms. With Rhys weight loss he’s started to notice a lot of changes, one being how easy he finds working out and still keeping a high intensity throughout the workout. He has also gained a lot of strength along the way which he is over the moon with.

Rhys puts in an incredible amount of effort week in week out always training first thing in the morning, starting the day off right, no? 😅
Well done again mate, I cant wait to see how much progress you’ll make in the next 3 months.

I’m pretty sure every sort of gym-goer at some point in their lives has hit a plateau and struggled to get out of it, a plateau refers to a sudden and dramatic decrease in the noticeable results of your regular workouts. This can happen in both strength and cardiovascular training, as well as in weight loss.

How to avoid a plateauing in your training.
-Changing your workout will help you to avoid hitting training plateaus. The exact methods that will be best for you will depend heavily on your individual goals and fitness level. Believe it or not, the human body is a master at adaptation, capable of quickly adjusting to meet the demands of any workout. If your workouts are not continually evolving to keep up with the increase in strength and endurance that your body is making, plateaus will occur.

-Rest periods
Keeping your rest consistent between sets is important. For example, if you’re the type of person who takes between 1 to 5 minutes between each set, your progression isn’t going to be as quick as someone who tracks their rest periods between sets rest periods are going to vary between each exercise. Such as compound exercises (Deadlifts, squats and bench) you will have a longer rest between sets as they’re a lot more taxing on the body compared to isolated exercises such as machine/dumbbells exercises.

-Tracking your workouts
Tracking your workouts helps keep you motivated because if you’re consistent enough you will see all the progress you have made over the past few weeks, it also allows you to be more accountable during your workouts and bring you towards your goals quicker.

-Sleep
Sleep is one of the main factors in bettering yourself in the gym. It’s simple if you don’t get enough sleep each night your body will be deprived of sleep and your energy output will decrease dramatically, this meaning your metabolism will slow down and your energy during your workouts will decrease. Your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) will decrease in speed so your body will start to conserve more calories and you will find it harder to lose weight.

DO YOU FEEL LIKE THIS HAS HAPPENED TO YOU?

Training day!

Decided to just stick to compound movements this session. This week I haven't found much time to train as much as I normally would, so I decided to go for an all-round upper body session😁

Deadlifts; 125KG 5x3
Bench press; 80KG 5x8
Did superset pull ups and dips but my phone died so I couldn't record them 🙃😂

Also struggled on the last few reps on bench 🥴

Calorie Tracking

When you're wanting to lose, gain or even maintain your weight the main thing you should be focusing on is your calories in vs calories out.

Logging your food isn't hard, there is numerous app that is free to download the main one being MyFitnessPal, you only have to scan the barcode to get it logged. When you're having to log your food every day it makes you more conscious of what food you're eating, as some foods are more calorie-dense than you thought. ie sauces, drinks and alcohol.

Calorie control is not so much about restricting your diet as it is about eating the right amount of good foods. It’s not easy to eat healthy all the time, but portion control is possible when good eating is not. Counting calories helps you eat the right amount of better foods. Pay attention to serving sizes!

If you need help with anything fitness related, or interested in personal training send me a DM and we can sort something.

The Deadlift Rebuild

For the past 2-2 and a half years, I have neglected to add deadlifts while training as I just fell out of love doing them, and I didn't enjoy the DOMs😂

But now with my training becoming more consistent week in week out, I will be adding these into my training routine as increasing my strength is my number one priority, so what better way to kick things off than starting deadlifting again🤪

My overall goal is to get to 4 plates (180KG) on the conventional deadlift, I will be tracking my progress over the coming months and seeing what PB’s I can smash along the way 💪

Why you should have a structure for your workouts.

Do you find yourself winging your workouts? Always wondering what exercise to do next?

A workout plan can benefit any sort of gym-goer, no matter what their goals are. Whether you're wanting to lose or gain muscle mass, a structured plan can put you on the right path to your success💪

Following a routine that you have created is a great way to stay motivated and push towards your goals, you can also add your version of fun so you enjoy the workout and process. It is also a great way of tracking your progress, being 4-6 weeks deep into a plan and looking back at how you used to struggle with a certain weight and that same weight is now a warm-up does show growth in how far you've come within your journey. Use 4 points in the post above to use as a guild to create your workout.

Mobility; Mobility plays a massive role in improving movement quality and preventing injuries throughout life.

Compound movements; Compound exercises have many benefits, they recruit multiple muscle groups to help you gain more strength and mass while also burning more calories than standard isolation exercises.

Hypertrophy; Hypertrophy training has many benefits, it aids in the help of gaining muscle mass, increases strength and power.

Rest periods; The time that you take between sets is a crucial variable of resistance training. Rest periods can be tweaked to complement changes to rep count and intensity. Too little rest between sets could mean submaximal muscle growth. Too much rest can take you out of the zone and waste precious gym time.

If you're struggling with writing up your own workout plans, drop me a message and we can get you on the right track! Or if you're around the gym feel free to ask me any questions😊

Right then, let's have a little chat about resistance training and how you can add them to your workouts and reap the benefits of the many styles to choose from 🏋️‍♂️

Pyramid style;

this involves a progressive or degressive step approach to the weight on each set you do on a certain exercise. I do enjoy adding this system into my training days by doing a "heavy to light" method to certain exercises, whether it be bicep curls, close grip lat pulldowns, or even goblet squats. I begin with a heavy load of 4-6 reps then decrease the weight and increase the reps for a total of 5-6 sets.

Drop sets;

Drops sets are used on the last set of the exercise as once you rep to failure you'll dramatically decrease the weight and go again till failure. adding drop sets to exercises like tricep extensions, dumbbell chest press, and leg extensions do help target that individual muscle group, and it also helps you show off that pump 💪

Supersets;

Supersets use two exercises performed in quick succession of one another with minimal rest. There are two variations you can use to add these to your workouts. you can perform two exercises for the same muscle group (pullups and dumbbell rows) or perform two exercises that involve antagonist muscle groups (chest and back). Supersets are very beneficial to muscle hypertrophy and muscular endurance.

straight sets;

Straight sets are your basic style of training. You keep the weight and reps the same on each individual set, this is normally used for smaller muscle groups and isolation movements. For example, this will be used when performing lateral raises. You will also keep the rest period the same between each set.

circuit training;

Circuit training consists of a series of exercises that one will perform in a set and have multiple exercises to perform one after another. normally you the rest periods will be quite short (15-30 seconds)

and reps would be quite high (10-15 reps). this style of training is good for those trying to lose weight.
