Round the Island Race

Round the Island Race Race day in 2026: Saturday 11th July Every year our competitors tell us that 'Britain's favourite yacht race' just gets better and better.

Great sailing weather helps of course, but the camaraderie afloat and ashore is what really makes this race special. That and the awesome sailing around a stunning coastline, interesting entries, personalities, amateurs putting their sailing skills to the test against the professionals, the Olympians, the World Champions, the record-breakers, the Round the Worlders. What a glorious and eclectic mass participation event to be a part of!

What better way to celebrate your journey Round The Island with a cold can of RTIR Pale Ale!
Powder Monkey Brewing Co. is proud to announce the launch of its veterans pale ale for the Round the Island Race weekend, bringing together sailing tradition, naval heritage, and the veteran community in one distinctive craft beer.
Brewed at the brewery's historic Old Gunpowder Store in Portsmouth's former Royal Navy gunpowder depot, the crisp pale ale celebrates the enduring naval ties. As a veteran-owned brewery rooted in military heritage and based in Gosport, Hampshire, partnerships like this reflect what matters most to us - bringing people together, celebrating shared experiences, and supporting communities with strong connections and purpose.
The collaboration also proudly supports Veterans Can, a dedicated non-profit and networking community focused on connecting and supporting veterans across the globe, championing balance, pride, and positivity beyond service.
Through this partnership, Powder Monkey Brewing Co. is raising a glass to the global veteran community and recognising the lasting impact military service continues to have on individuals and society.
Beer lovers and racegoers can expect bright hop character, subtle citrus notes, and a smooth, refreshing finish - a proper craft beer with heritage, character, and purpose in every sip.
The RTIR pale ale will be available throughout the Round the Island Race weekend at the Island Sailing Club, served both in cans and on draught, as well as stocked across a number of venues and hospitality locations supporting the event.
"We're incredibly excited to partner with Powder Monkeys Veteran Pale Ale for the UK's most iconic sailing weekends," said Justin Cooper, Marketing Officer "The Round the Island Race brings together people from all walks of life through a shared passion and sense of community, which aligns perfectly with what Powder Monkey stands for. This beer is a celebration of heritage, camaraderie, and the connections that continue long after service."
With thousands expected to descend on the Isle of Wight for the annual event, the collaboration promises to deliver a memorable beer that captures the spirit of the race weekend while honouring the people and stories behind it.

The Island Sailing Club was delighted to welcome Mr R.D.Bagnall for a memorable visit, recounting his victory in the 1977 Round the Island Race aboard his winning yacht Silver Jubilee. There was definitely an appreciation for the legacy of wining the Gold Roman Bowl.

Mr Bagnall, recalled both the intensity of the competition and the camaraderie among sailors. He spoke fondly of the conditions on the day and the tactical decisions that led to his success. With a smile, he also addressed the long-standing rumours that his victory had been “a fix,” given the coincidence of winning during the Queen’s Jubilee year in 1977. While clearly amused by the speculation, he assured us that the triumph of Jubilee was hard-earned and entirely genuine.

In an unfortunate mix-up, on race day in 1977 Mr Bagnall’s twin brother had used his ISC dinner ticket, meaning that when Mr Bagnall arrived, his seat had already been taken. Mistaken for an uninvited guest, he was rather firmly escorted off the premises by the ISC security. The confusion was eventually resolved when his brother sheepishly confessed, prompting much laughter among those present. With the matter settled, Mr Bagnall was warmly welcomed back inside, and the evening continued in high spirits, becoming a story in its own right that was enjoyed by all.

Many of you will have seen yesterday's announcement of the 2025 Isle of Wight Festival dates, which coincide with the scheduled date for the 2025 Round the Island Race of the 21st June.

Regrettably, despite publishing our date three years ago and receiving assurances from the local authorities that an early announcement would guarantee no clash with the Festival, this conflict of dates between two major Island events has been permitted, with no prior warning. While we will obviously seek an explanation, the situation is unlikely to change, given that Festival tickets are already on sale.

Running both events on the same day presents significant challenges for agency support, safety, transportation, accommodation and volunteer availability. Equally, changing the date of our race is not straightforward, with the attendant implications for the sailing calendar of Solent based clubs and organisations, accommodation bookings and crew commitments.

At this time, we are considering all options and will communicate any decision regarding the Race as soon as possible.
