💥MATCH REPORT 💥
🏏 Wick CC vs Colwinston CC 🏏
📅 Sunday 7 June 📅

With 99% of all cricket matches called off due to the torrential rainfall on Saturday it was with much surprise that we rocked up to the village green on Sunday with a decent prospect of a game.

With more weather apps consulted than NASA, we expected that rain was coming around 5.03pm (According to Gutsy) so shortened the match to 30 overs a side (After much negotiation).

The selection session held by Russ in the week was a very tough affair with several players falling short of his demanding requirements – including (much to everyone’s shock) the toughest man in village cricket Owen. That last sprint up the sand dunes of Merthyr Mawr doing nothing for him.

A debutant starting for us this week as well – welcome Iwan. A few of the older heads looked at Iwan and thought he could be a handy player (exact opposite of them i.e. young & athletic). When they overheard him and Tom discussing matches they had played against each other then they realised he must be good.

With Colwinston still arriving it was decided that Wick would bowl first. With no Owz, Ellis (who had somehow managed to survive selection boot camp – rumours that money changed hands are unproven) was asked to don the wicket keeping gear (for first time in about 3 years).

Gutsy and Tom opening the bowling. Gutsy decent first over, ball swinging in nicely. Tom then claiming 2 wickets in his first over (both bowled) to leave everyone a little stunned and nervous about how long game was going to last. Gutsy joined the party claiming 2 wickets (1 bowled & 1 caught by Saurabh) of his own before both did the honourable thing and took themselves off. With bowlers agreeing to bowl a max of 3 overs each, The combination of Young Sam & John next, both bowling well but the resolute Colwinston batsmen settling down to build a total. John did get a wicket in his last over, removing a Vale CC colleague with a catch by Andy.

Simon & Saurabh on next to bowl, Simon fresh back from the NY Knicks basketball game (ringside seats sitting next to Adam Sandler!). His usual tactic of wide, wide wicket failing for the first time in many years. Andy did a great impersonation of Owz at one stage, batsman going down the pitch, missing the ball , Andy actually catching it, batsman not trying to get back into his crease. Andy just looking at the ball in his hands, shocked and forgetting to try and run the batsman out. They do say you should try and emulate your heroes!

Spin twins of debutant Iwan and skipper Russ next, confusing the batsmen with a mix of leg & off spin with the odd top spinner thrown in. Ellis behind the stumps totally at ease reading the ball out of the hand and dealing with the variable bounce (Not!). Iwan did get the break through (and his first wicket for Wick) with a catch by Tom. After bowling Iwan came into slip and had a chat with Andy, Andy “ nice bowling, do you bowl on a Saturday normally” Iwan “No I’m a wicket keeper”, Andy “!*! Russ, why I am I keeping”.

Big Ben and Steve on next a mixture of spin and wibbly wobblies – Steve striking in his last over, another catch by Saurabh. Tom then back on for his third and last over to round the innings off. He struck again with his very last ball. Bowled.

A good fight back by Colwinston, after a quick start by Wick, got them to 157-8 in their 30 overs, with a solid 48 by Robin Jones.

Wick bowling – Gutsy 3 overs 0 maidens 9 runs for 2 wickets (3-0-9-2), Tom 3-1-9-3, Sam 3-0-18-0, John 3-0-18-1, Simon 3-0-16-0, Saurabh 3-1-8-0, Iwan 3-0-12-1, Russ 3-0-19-0, Ben 3-0-18-0 & Steve 3-0-20-1. Apparently no byes were conceded by Ellis :)

Innings break brought more checks of the weather apps, Gutsy now updating his forecast to rain at 5.09pm, so Russ opted for a full on blitz attack to ensure we finished the game prior to the Gutsy guaranteed rain arriving.
So Steve and Iwan strode out first (another new opening partnership). Both looked good – different styles but achieving same thing – one athletic and young and the other Steve.
They passed the 50 run partnership with both getting a six in the process. They had progressed to 67 before Iwan fell to good ball, bowled. Out for 29 off 22 balls on his batting debut. Big Ben strolling out next, to keep the youth and experience partnership going. Steve still accumulating nicely.

Ben took a few balls to settle in before starting to pick the run rate up. They took the total past the 100 mark before Steve fell for a decent 37 off 57 balls.

Russ joined Big Ben and nudged a few singles, allowing Ben to go into overdrive and hitting balls to all parts of the ground, including 2 big sixes.

We crossed the finish line with a few overs left and no further wickets falling.

For those of you who are curious, Nostradamus Gutsy predicted rain at 5:09pm and it started at 5:11pm. Close but no cigar!

Wick 158-2 off 23.4 overs
Steve 37 (57 balls), Iwan 29 (22), Ben 60* (45), Russ 16 (18)

Back to the The Star Inn, Wick for the usual roast potatoes and sandwiches – some say the best roasties in the world. Thanks to Emily and the team.

Some things for the committee to debate:
• Should all debutants buy everyone free beer all night?
• Is Gutsy really Michael Fish in disguise?
• Is Owen now the No17 keeper in the squad?
• Should Simon invite us all to the NBA finals next game in NY?

Tune in next week for another exciting episode of deep sea snorkelling underwater cricket.

💥MATCH REPORT💥
🏏WICK CC VS BLAENGARW & COEDELY CC🏏
📆SUNDAY 10 MAY📆

Jumpers & Alarm Clocks

After last weeks win over Barry West End, this week was the turn of Blaengarw to attack the fortress that is the home of cricket AKA Wick Village Green.

The Blaengarw team are good bunch and even had a couple of Wick originals in their team – Chris (who plays for them on a Saturday) and South Wales most notorious free agent – Kenny (who to be fair to him was going to play for both teams.

A beautiful summers day (OK there was a windchill factor of -30°C) awaited us and the all the watching village supporters – many thanks for coming out.

Initial discussions in the Wick team dug out concerned should we have opted for the 6-inch thick thermal jumpers (emblazoned with the Star Inn Wick logo) instead of the 3-inch thick, as the windchill started to kick in. Young Sam, a trained first aider who was deputising for Doctor Tom, was doing regular finger and toe checks of the team to ensure frost bite was not setting in. This was made more relevant when after not having a coin toss we were selected to bat first.

Steve and Amal were chosen to brave the blizzard first, with Owz and John bravely walking out to umpire. All other players dug snow holes to shelter except for the scorer who just put on every item of clothing he owned (and some he didn’t).

Anyway to the cricket, Steve and Amal set about a good start and after a couple of nervous first overs soon settled into a good rhythm. Scoreboard ticked along and we soon reached 50 for no wicket after just 11 overs. Steve had started strongly but it was Amal who caught the crowds eye with some lovely shots all around the ground. Steve was the first to fall for a steady 28 with the score at 73. Big Ben Wide strolled in next but we lost Amal to the very next ball for a well made 37. Skipper Russ in next. A quick drink (hot chocolate) taken after 20 overs 79-2.

Unfortunately the quick break didn’t do Russ any favours and he was out first over back.
With Kenny fielding and swinging his arms to trying to catch the Blaengarw skippers eye, there was a gasp when the ball was thrown his way. Would he bowl against us! The answer of course was yes. With Owz the new batter and Ben waiting, Kenny strode in. As normal deadly accurate stuff, with runs hard to come by. Owz then did the unthinkable and got a top edge to a ball from Kenny which was very well caught diving forward by the square leg fielder. John next in and he and Ben settled and then pushed on before Ben hit Kenny very hard straight down the pitch, only for Chris to take a very good catch at mid-on. So really Wick, caught by Wick bowled Wick.

122 for 5 after 35. Andy in next, cold, aching and just old really. He and John struggled to hit the big shots initially but managed to tick the board over and then hit a few bigger shots towards the end before Andy was caught on the penultimate ball. Simon strolling in to defend the last ball. Wick finished on 147-6. (Steve 28, Amal 37, Ben 20, Russ 1, Owen 0, John 26*, Andy 19, Simon 0*)

Innings break – Sam brought out his picnic hamper – which would have made Yogi Bear proud.

We strolled out, all jumpered up, to start the defence of our below par total. Russ opted to mirror the batting start by opening with Amal and Steve. Amal was full of pace and vigour and Steve was….. there?

No it may have been cold and some of the team may have played the day before and were tired and stiff and some may have not slept well, but was it a critical error by the skipper at the break not to have set the alarm clock to wake up the Wick fielding players? Read on to find out.

A classic village cricket moment arose in the 4th over, the aggressive opening batsman looking to attack Steve by coming down the pitch, Steve out doing him with guile and experience (that is what you said Steve isn’t it?), batsman swinging and missing, 3 yards out of his crease, Owz catching the ball behind the stumps, Owz looking shocked at the ball in his hands, the batsman looking at Owz and then at the vast gap back to his crease, Owz still looking shocked at the ball in his hands, the batsman slowly ambling back towards his crease, Owz still looking shocked at the ball in his hands, batsman stopping for a cup of tea, Owz now realising he had caught the ball looking around and smiling at us to say “hey I caught it”, Young Sam using school yard language to suggest to Owz to stump the batsman, Owz now looking shocked at young Sam. Batsman now finished his cup of tea, wanders back to his crease and then Owz removes the bails. Not out, eventually.
Play continued with Amal striking first, an LBW decision given. Steve, not to be outdone then did the same. Decent opening from both, but some big shots by the new batsman leaving Blaengarw 50-2 after 8. Well ahead of the run rate required. Saurabh and Simon on next, with Saurabh unlucky on a couple of occasions with edges just dropping short or out of reach.
After being busy at the Oscars and other USA awards shows for the last few weeks, Simon had returned from Hollywood and blew off the rust straight away with his normal line and lengths. He was rewarded with 2 wickets, Chris being one of them, with good catches by Saurabh and Amal. After 15 overs they were 90-4.

A change of speed now with Russ and young Sam on to bemuse the batsman with spin. Russ back to his best with googlies and arm balls galore. He struck twice in quick succession.
Not to be outdone young Sam decide to go one better and take 3 wickets (for just 3 runs in 3 overs), 2 bowled and then a good catch by John to remove Kenny. To be fair to Kenny he had fielded and bowled for Blaengarw and then come off to pad up for us. He then fielded for us before leaving to pad up and bat for them. A prize scalp.

This left Blaengarw wobbling at 111-9.
Russ then decided that Andy had warmed up enough to be able to bowl and he waddled in and was lucky enough to claim the last wicket without any further addition to the score.
Wick victorious by 36 runs – fortess Wick
A decent all-round performance with some good batting by Amal, Steve, Ben and John and then good bowling and fielding by Sam, Russ, Kenny (for them), Saurabh and Simon. I can confirm that Andy and Owz were also present.
As usual we were treated very well back at the Inn Wick, with sandwiches and roasties. Remember if you want good food, good beer and a great atmosphere you can’t go wrong with The Star Inn, Wick

Some things for the committee to consider:
• Should Russ buy a tickling stick to ensure we are all awake after any breaks?
• Should our new jumpers have space for hot water bottles next time?
• Would Sam be fined if he kicks Owz to awaken him behind the stumps?
• Can we all get sponsored picnic baskets like young Sam?
• Why didn’t we get front row seats at the Oscars?

Next up the return of Wayne and Bridgend / F Troop for a midweek T20...now this match report is one to look out for!

If anyone would like to sponsor our new picnic hampers, matches, players or any kit please feel free to get in touch. You would be rewarded with many mentions across our vast social media platforms – I believe the phrase is “going viral” and if you want we can also send Sam around to wash your car. If you really want to push the boat out we can send Owz too.

💥 MATCH REPORT 💥
🏏 WICK CC vs BARRY WEST END🏏
📆 SUNDAY 3RD MAY📆

With rain once again calling games off across South Wales the previous day, Wick woke up to glorious sunshine over the village green as the boys looked to get back to winning ways after the defeat to Llantwit Major the previous weekend.

With Captain Russ away on an under 11s rugby tour (as a parent, not playing…I’m told), it was over to stand in captain Steve to take over the unenviable task of pulling together 11 players. After a morning of hokey-cokey with players in-out-in-out and with thanks to young Sam, Owen and the sheriff of the Vale, Ben Wade for stepping in last minute, Wick had 11 and it was game on.

Wick were batting first but as the match reporter was sitting on a train somewhere around Bristol at the time we don’t know who won the toss, but since it wasn’t Russell we can assume Steve won and Wick were batting.
I’m told that Ben and Steve opened and both fell on 8 runs a piece bringing Tom and his father and Wick debutant, Jason to the crease. We can assume that both played some good cricket (you can fill in the gaps in your own minds) as by the time the match reporter arrived, the Wick ship had been steadied, and the home side were 76/3 at the break.

Owen, having sauntered to the green fresh from a train from London and his sister’s hen do, started to make himself comfortable in his camping chair before being told he was in to bat next. With Tom out shortly after drinks and Owen still padding up, Amal was in alongside Jason who was ticking along nicely. A couple of shots later and Owen came to the crease with Amal caught for 4.

Owen, no doubt suffering from not being able to do his extensive warm up and visualisation routines, struggled to get the ball of the square and when he eventually did, he chipped it up and was caught for 3.

The rest of the Wick innings saw a big swinging Saurabh, a Boycott-esque Sam and a ‘he’s quite nippy isn’t he’ John come and go before Jason and incredibly unwell Gutsy brought the Wick innings to a close at 67 and 2 not out respectively. Wick posted an about par 164 from their 40 overs, enough to make a game of it but would be it enough to overcome the always competitive West End side?

With Gutsy’s health rapidly declining during tea he was sent home and newly installed Vale 4s Captain Jeff was subbed on. With no Gutsy to open the bowling Captain Steve elected to open with Tom and Gutsy’s greatest nemesis, Amal. Steve also opted to have Owen keep wicket, a bold choice considering Jason keeps wicket for the Wales over 55s first team – we can’t work that one out either.

Wick couldn’t have asked for a much better start to the innings as Tom and Amal ripped through the West End top order. Amal opened the innings with a maiden over only to be outdone by Tom who bowled a Wicket maiden in his. Amal didn’t have to wait long for his Wicket as in the next over as the remaining West End opener nicked one behind that was caught one handed by a diving Owen in a catch that could only be described as ‘a screamer’ (his words and not the words of the rest of the team). And as the old adage goes ‘one brings two’, Amal took his second wicket to leave the West End top order reeling.

There was no let up from the Wick attack as a wicket for Saurabh, his second in two games and another two from Tom left West end 5 down for 20 runs after 8 overs. Tenko and Steve managed to steady the ship for West End, batting out the overs and taking them to drinks at 39/7. But West End were all out for 55 in the 26th over, the rest of the Wickets were shared out with every other bowler taking a wicket each, from youngsters Ben, John and Sam to the evergreen Steve it was a fantastic bowling performance from the team to bring home an unexpected but comprehensive victory for Wick.

Takeaways from the game were:
- Two Fenn’s really are better than one
- Wick really need to work on their fielding and catching
- Why did Gutsy think coming to play when he was clearly on deaths door was a good idea!?
- Will the new club kit shop ever be ready!?

Whilst we may not know the answers to all of these questions, plenty of discussions were had over some roast potatoes and a few pints post-game at The Star Inn, Wick , thank you as always.

Next up for Wick is a visit from relatively new friends Blaengarw and Coedely CC, the new club of wick stalwart Chris. Who will he play for? We won’t need to wait long to find out...

🏏MATCH REPORT🏏
🏏WICK CC VS LLANTWIT CAVALIERS🏏
🏏SUNDAY 26 APRIL🏏

As the sun rose over the village green on Sunday, so dawned a new season of cricket and the weight of expectation after last year’s stellar season hung heavy in the air.

With local clubs having seen pre-season games called off over the last few weeks, Wick had timed their curtain raiser perfectly and the sun shone down as we welcomed Llantwit Major Cavaliers Cricket Club to The Home of Village Cricket®. The green has seen some improvements over winter, namely the shed has been tidied up to make it easier for Kenny to store the mower, and a ‘big net’ has been put up opposite the pavilion to stop the ball from going on to the road.

All this has been done as part of the 10-year plan to make the Village Green a test cricket ground. Big thanks go to the Vale and Andy for funding the net, work is now underway to officially name it ‘The Andy Ellis Big Net’ in recognition of his generosity…and in the hopes he might fund another one should it be needed.

With good availability, returning Captain Russell had the luxury of having to make selection decisions and with an XI included two debuts and three players under 22 it’s great to see the club continue to grow and the enthusiasm the local community has for proper village cricket.

Anyway, to business. The Wick CC Toss Committee unanimously agreed that we’d want to bowl first to – in their words – “get it out of the way”, so it was no surprise when Captain Russ lost the toss and we were put in to bat.
Now there’s four things that are certain in life: death, taxes, Kenny taking wickets and Steve and Dicky opening the batting. Steve, continuing the fine form he found at the end of last season got off to a strong start, batting with his trademark steadiness and putting putting away the bad ball Steve kept the scoreboard ticking over. Rob and Tom came and went for a few runs each before Steve was joined at the crease by young Ryan. With Steve ticking away Ryan got the scoreboard moving by playing some big shots, even hitting the only 6 of the day for the Wick side.

At points there was real concern from the Wick players on the boundary that all the running young Ryan’s (17 years old) was making Steve (54) do would be too much for him.
With Steve bowled Ryan was joined by Owen for a few overs before he fell for 34 and Russell Joined Owen at the crease…before Owen swiftly departed a few balls later. The rest of the Wick innings was relatively uneventful, with Russ scoring some runs as partners came and went. Highlights included Andy scoring a blockbuster 12 and debutant Saurabh managing to run himself out off a no-ball that confused everyone. Self-confessed all rounder Gutsy and Ben, fresh off a big score of 80 for Vale the previous day departed scoreless. Wick and the Village Green always know how to keep players humble.

Russell, no doubt shaking off the early season rust fell for an uncharacteristically low score of 32, leaving John stranded on the other end 0 not out and setting Llantwit a target of 154 to chase.

Captain Russ elected to open with a pairing of youth and experience in Ryan and Gutsy. Legend has it that in the 18th and 19th centuries ‘The Wreckers of Wick’ used to stand on the nearby cliffs and use lamps to lure ships on to the rocks below to plunder their cargo. 37 ships known to have met their demise on that treacherous stretch of coast.

Over 250 years later another wrecker joined their ranks, this time it was Gutsy luring ships (opening batters) to their doom using his lamp (surprisingly aggressive bowling) to plunder their cargo (wickets). That is to say that Gutsy, opening the bowling managed to take two wickets in his spell, and with Ryan going for just 8 runs in his 4 overs, Wick were looking good.

On next to bowl were Wick youth product John and Tom, but a change of bowling brought no respite for the Cav’s batters. With Tom bowling a consistent line and length he took two wickets in his 5 overs and accompanied by John taking a wicket straight out of the Owen Thomas bowling textbook – wide, wide, wicket – The Cavs were 4 down for not many runs.
Now this is where things started going wrong for Wick. Having spent most of last season patting themselves on the back over the high standard of fielding, Wick went on to drop around 7 catches off one batter. The other problem was that said batter was 15 years old and doing his best impression of that big hitting IPL teenager everyone’s talking about.
He hit the ball to all corners of the green, clearing our brand-new net with ease and leaving a trail of injured players in his wake. New addition Tom, a doctor by trade, was kept busy with the first aid bag; strapping up Russells hand and sending Dicky on his way to A&E with a badly busted thumb. As of writing Dicky is still at the Royal Glam awaiting surgery – get well soon Dicky!
Special mention to young Ben who put his hand in front of a very fast-moving ball and got a considerable bruise for his effort…sadly this match reporter still considers it a dropped catch and an opportunity missed, but to be fair to him he was very brave about the whole thing.

With Dicky heading off to A&E it did make way for Wick royalty Kenny to come on as a substitute fielder, dressed head to toe in Brazil paraphernalia – Kenny claims Brazil is ‘his team’, not Wales - he was more akin to Kenaldinho than anything seen on a village cricket ground.

And this was pretty much the tale of the Cavaliers innings, the youngster chasing down the total with Ben and Saurabh picking up a couple of wickets at the other end. The Cav’s youngster reached a blockbusting 77 before Wick finally made the breakthrough with Owen getting the stumping off Steve’s bowling.
Sadly, it was too little too late for Wick as by the time the wicket fell the scores were level and a few balls later Llantwit brought home the win in the 31st over.

Having gone all last season unbeaten at home, Wick fell at the first hurdle in 2026 but no doubt this loss will act as a catalyst for the team, lifting of the weight of expectation means Wick will approach the rest of the season with the freedom and trademark expressive cricket they’re known for…and hopefully less dropped catches.

Thank you as always to our sponsors The Star Inn, Wick for the post-match hospitality and to CGI for their kit sponsorship.

Next up for Wick is the visit of our friends from the Big Island, Barry West End on Sunday 3/5.
