🥋 𝗢𝗡𝗘 𝗪𝗘𝗘𝗞 𝗗𝗢𝗪𝗡. 𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗪𝗔𝗦 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗜𝗥 𝗙𝗜𝗥𝗦𝗧 𝗦𝗠𝗔𝗟𝗟 𝗩𝗜𝗖𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗬? ❤️

The first few days of the new school year are almost over.

This weekend, I'd encourage every parent to ask their child one simple question:

"What are YOU proud of?"

Perhaps they put their hand up in class.

Spoke to someone new.

Helped another child.

Tried something they normally avoid.

Or simply walked through the school gates despite feeling nervous.

As adults, these things can seem small.

But after more than 50 years in martial arts, I've learned something:

Small victories build confidence.

It's something we see every week at Atomic Black Belt Academy in Coventry.

Children don't become confident simply because we tell them to "be confident".

They build confidence by collecting little pieces of evidence that say:

"I can do this."

One achievement.

One challenge overcome.

One brave decision.

One small victory at a time. 🥋

So this weekend, ask your child:

"What are you proud of yourself for this week?"

And when they tell you...celebrate it. ❤️

Because the achievement might seem small to us.

To them, it could be enormous.

🥋 𝗛𝗘𝗬 𝗣𝗔𝗥𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗦, 𝗜𝗦 𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗖𝗛𝗜𝗟𝗗 𝗜𝗦 𝗦𝗛𝗬?

It's one of the questions parents have asked me many times over the years when considering martial arts for their child.

And my answer usually begins with this:

Being shy isn't something that needs to be "fixed".

Every child is different.

Some children will walk into Atomic Black Belt Academy for the first time and immediately want to join in.

Others might stay close to Mum or Dad.

Some will watch quietly before they're ready to participate.

And that's absolutely fine.

We don't expect a child to arrive on their first day already full of confidence.

Building confidence is part of the journey.

Over more than 25 years of teaching children at Atomic Black Belt Academy in Coventry, I've watched many quieter and more reserved children gradually begin to change.

Not because we're trying to turn them into somebody they're not.

But because they're discovering what they're capable of.

First, they join in.

Then they learn someone's name.

They master a technique.

They answer an instructor's question.

They put their hand up.

They help another student.

And one day, the nervous beginner who once stood at the edge of the mats may be the person welcoming another new child into the class.

That's confidence.

Not necessarily becoming the loudest person in the room.

Becoming comfortable enough to be yourself in the room.

As children begin a new school year, that kind of quiet confidence can be incredibly valuable.

New classroom.

New teacher.

New classmates.

Perhaps even a completely new school.

We can't remove every situation that makes our children feel nervous.

But we can help them develop the confidence to face those situations one small step at a time.

That's one of the reasons children's martial arts at Atomic is about so much more than learning kicks and punches.

We're developing great people who happen to train martial arts. ❤️

🥋 𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗖𝗔𝗡 𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗖𝗛𝗜𝗟𝗗 𝗗𝗢 𝗧𝗢𝗗𝗔𝗬 𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗬 𝗖𝗢𝗨𝗟𝗗𝗡'𝗧 𝗗𝗢 𝗬𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗗𝗔𝗬?

It's an interesting question.

And perhaps one we don't ask our children often enough.

As parents, it's very easy to notice the big achievements.

The certificate.

The good school report.

The medal.

The new belt.

But confidence is often being built long before any of those things happen.

It's built when a child finally manages something they've been struggling with.

When they put their hand up even though they're nervous.

When they introduce themselves to someone new.

When they make a mistake, but decide to have another go.

When they hear themselves saying...

"I did it!"

At Atomic Black Belt Academy in Coventry, we see these little moments all the time.

A technique that seemed impossible a few weeks ago suddenly works.

A child who once stood quietly at the back begins putting their hand up.

A nervous beginner starts walking onto the mats without looking for Mum or Dad.

A student who once needed encouragement starts encouraging somebody else.

To the outside world, these might seem like very small things.

To that child, they can be enormous.

Because every small achievement provides another little piece of evidence:

"Maybe I can do difficult things."

And as our children prepare for a new school year, that's a belief worth helping them develop.

So this week, try asking your child:

"What's something you can do today that you couldn't do before?"

Then give them time to think about it.

You might help them recognise just how far they've already come. ❤️

🎒🥋 𝗡𝗘𝗪 𝗦𝗖𝗛𝗢𝗢𝗟 𝗬𝗘𝗔𝗥. 𝗡𝗘𝗪 𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗟𝗟𝗘𝗡𝗚𝗘𝗦. 𝗡𝗘𝗪 𝗢𝗣𝗣𝗢𝗥𝗧𝗨𝗡𝗜𝗧𝗜𝗘𝗦.

For thousands of children across Coventry, today is a big day.

The school uniform is back on.

The alarm clock has made an unwelcome return.

And after weeks of summer holidays, it's time to walk through those school gates again.

For some children, they'll run through excited to see their friends.

For others, there might be a few butterflies.

A new teacher.

A different classroom.

New classmates.

And for some, the much bigger step of starting an entirely new school.

If your child felt a little nervous this morning, that's okay.

Confidence doesn't mean never feeling nervous.

𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼.

That's something we see all the time at Atomic Black Belt Academy in Coventry.

A child attempts a technique they've never tried before.

They don't get it right.

They try again.

Gradually, they learn something incredibly important:

It's okay not to be able to do something yet.

That little word, yet, can change everything.

Because challenges aren't necessarily things to avoid.

They're opportunities to grow.

And that's one of the lessons we want our students to carry from the martial arts mats into their everyday lives.

Into the classroom.

Into friendships.

Into exams.

Into difficult situations.

And eventually, into adulthood.

So to every child across Coventry starting or returning to school today...

You don't have to have everything figured out.

Be kind.

Be brave.

Try something new.

Help someone who might be feeling nervous.

And remember...

Every Black Belt was once a beginner too. ❤️

☀️🥋 𝗢𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗦𝗨𝗠𝗠𝗘𝗥 𝗪𝗔𝗥𝗥𝗜𝗢𝗥 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 - 𝗠𝗜𝗦𝗦𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗣𝗟𝗘𝗧𝗘! 🥋☀️

What a summer it has been.

Operation Summer Warrior 2026 has officially come to an end, and we have been absolutely blown away by the response from our Atomic students and families.

The standard of the entries has been phenomenal.

We've seen creativity, confidence, determination, family involvement and, most importantly, students taking the values they learn at Atomic Black Belt Academy in Coventry beyond the mats and into their everyday lives.

And that's exactly what Operation Summer Warrior was created to achieve.

Martial arts isn't something that should only make a difference during the time a student spends inside the academy.

The confidence to try something new.

The discipline to complete something you started.

The resilience to keep going.

The willingness to help others.

The courage to stand up and share your ideas.

These are skills for life.

We've also received so many wonderful comments from parents about the challenge, and that has meant a great deal to us.

To every parent who encouraged a challenge, held a camera, joined in, helped with an idea or simply said "Come on, you can do this", thank you. ❤️

And to every student who accepted the challenge...

Be proud of yourselves.

Whether you completed six missions or challenged yourself to do even more, you demonstrated something we talk about every week at Atomic:

A Black Belt is much more than something you wear around your waist. It's an attitude towards life.

After more than 25 years of teaching martial arts to children and families in Coventry, moments like these remind us why we do what we do.

We don't simply want to develop great martial artists.

We want to develop great people who happen to train in martial arts.

🥋 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗙𝗜𝗗𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗘 𝗜𝗦𝗡'𝗧 𝗚𝗜𝗩𝗘𝗡. 𝗜𝗧'𝗦 𝗕𝗨𝗜𝗟𝗧.

As parents, we'd love to be able to simply give our children confidence.

But after more than 50 years of teaching martial arts, I've learned that real confidence doesn't work that way.

Children build confidence by discovering what they are capable of.

I see it every week at Atomic Black Belt Academy in Coventry.

A child struggles with a new technique.

They try.

It doesn't quite work.

They try again.

Then suddenly...

They do it.

It might only be a small achievement, but something important has just happened.

That child has proved to themselves:

"I couldn't do this before, but now I can."

And that's where confidence starts.

One small victory becomes another.

Then another.

Eventually, "I can't do it" starts becoming...

"I'll give it a try."

That's the confidence we want our children to take with them when they return to school.

The confidence to put their hand up.

To speak to someone new.

To tackle something difficult.

To make a mistake and try again.

At Atomic Black Belt Academy, children's martial arts is the vehicle, but developing confident, focused and resilient young people is the bigger goal.

So here's a little question you could ask your child today:

"What's something you can do now that you couldn't do a year ago?"

You might be surprised by their answer. ❤️
