Next up in our ‘Golfing in the footsteps Friday’, series we are featuring a Coventry Golf Club legend, Dr Phil Weaver OBE.
For 35 years, Phil Weaver was at the heart of Coventry Golf Club.
Joining the club in 1966 as Senior Assistant Professional, Phil became Head PGA Professional in 1979, a position he held until his retirement in 2014. Alongside his role as Head Professional, he also became Course Manager, helping shape not only the golf played at Coventry, but the course itself.
But Phil’s influence extended far beyond our fairways.
A talented player, he competed on the European Tour for five years and represented Great Britain & Ireland in two PGA Cups, winning five of his seven matches.
Away from playing, Phil became one of the most influential figures in the game. He served as Chairman of the PGA for an unprecedented 25 years, from 1989 to 2014, and was Joint Chairman of the European Ryder Cup Committee between 1989 and 2005.
In 2012, he was awarded the OBE for services to golf.
Here at Coventry, Phil left another important legacy. His passion for nature and sustainability helped the club become the first golf club in England to achieve GEO Certified status in 2012, recognising its outstanding environmental work.
Phil Weaver was much more than a golf professional. He was a player, mentor, administrator, environmentalist and custodian of the game’s history.
A Coventry Golf Club legend whose influence reached far beyond the club itself.
