We have some very sad news to share. Our great friend and team-mate, John Wildman, tragically passed away last night.
As a mark of our great fondness and respect for John, our teams playing today have held a minuteโs silence in his honour before the start of the match.
John, left-hand end of the back row in the team photo and shown on the left receiving an end of season award from Simon Harrison, was an elegant opening batsman. He played many fine innings both for Corwen and also for Newport Fugitives during the several years he spent living and working in South Wales.
Beyond that, however, John was a pillar of our club. As one of our coaches, he put in many hours helping our juniors to begin their cricketing journeys. He also did an enormous amount of unpaid work in raising money for the club and the wider community. From a new electronic scoreboard to new rollers and mowers - John was behind most big ticket purchases that the club has made in recent years.
John was passionate about developing the club and getting people to play sport in general. His philosophy was very much โBuild it and they will comeโ. And he took this to another level with the amazing, new tennis courts, for which he secured the funding - a truly amazing facility for a small community.
However, John was much more to us in Corwen cricket club than the runs he scored, the young cricketers he coached or the money he raised. John was a true and much loved friend. We were all very fond of John and are devastated that he has been taken from us and all of his family and friends so young.
To accompany the photo of the minuteโs silence, Simon Harrison, one our longest serving players and members wrote the following, which gives a good sense of the emotions we all feel just now:
โThis is for you @โจJohn Wildman.โฉ Someone I grew up with in Llandrillo. You didnโt say a lot, but you didnโt have to my friend. True ambassador for cricket - not only Corwen, but when I played my first game for Wales down south, the club we played only had good things to say about how you changed their club around and all the kit you got for them was amazing.
Another taken way too early. God seems to take the wrong people for some reason. Only God knows why. Maybe he plays tennis Jonny and needs a new fancy, dancy, all singing court up there! But, I know one thing: I will miss you and so will Corwen CC.
See you again .

Rest easy dear John.
