Today would have been the 2020 RNRMC Field Gun Competition day. Here is a great description of what our Field Gunners would have been experiencing. We’ll be back 💪🏻
We all know what a great competition and spectacle we are missing today.
After the bustle of sometimes gun flipping efforts on the Friday, the Saturday morning always seems quiet and cool, refreshing on the faces reddened from the sun baked heats of the day before.
There is a nervous hush across breakfast for the crews. The Executive Committee with coffees in hand, yes the BC got his round in, seem relaxed huddled around a table but if you look closely behind the smiles and laughs at memories past you will notice they keep checking and rechecking run sheets, timings, presentation orders. The day must be good, the day will be good.
Old hands from crews past start to appear and the Dits begin. No1 Trainers pass each other wishing well and good luck, nothing cynical here, it is said and meant, stay safe old friend.
The Committee have moved, the table is empty, they can be seen passing through the tents wishing all well, gripping rule books and call sheets, heading off across the tracks to their different stations.
There is a light breeze at first...... silence..... the odd shouted command floats on the air but the tracks lay empty and silent, a handful of bodies ready to watch. Is this REALLY the big occasion?
The BC strides out to the centre of the tracks and waits, patiently watching the hands move on his timepiece. A welcome is heard across the PA..... it doesn't seem natural in this hushed atmosphere.
There is almost an electricity in the air, anticipation building to a high pressure that you can feel, the sound of a muffled bagpipe hangs in the air, yet the tracks are empty.
Then it happens...... The whistle of the BC blasts across the tracks, a cheer goes up and a very distinct rumble starts as the noise of guns, limbers and the crews hauling them bursts through out onto the tracks........
The game is now very much afoot and the sun will intensify its touch on us all.
