I am so immensely proud of these boys. These boys are my first group that I have coached up to DPP level. They had their first Bath DPP session and absolutely smashed it. The world is yours boys, go grab it! 💪 👊

Today would have been a day for excuses not train. The following excuses were thrown around:

- the pitch is waterlogged
- it’s too wet
- they’re just not feeling it tonight
- I think they’re getting ill
- (player name) doesn’t want to get wet
- (parents name) I don’t want them getting in the car muddy

Instead we had 30 odd players brave the weather and the mud and have an absolutely cracking training session.

I’ll share the plan later, but got me thinking about those quotes that sick with me when it gets though and thought I’d share them!

Sometimes the training that you think will be awful, end up being the best!

Change that perception! 💪 👊

Throughly enjoying watching England vs Australia in the Rugby League Wheelchair World Cup. A truly incredible example of how to use and create space on a pitch. Outstanding! 🏉💪 Rugby League World Cup: men’s, women’s and wheelchair Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby 🏈

I have a bit of an issue with these tackling cylinders. They promote children running at them as fast a possible, pretty much performing a spear tackle every time.

This then is never followed up as the pads do not simulate the real thing, i/e a human.

I like to use them in a variety of different ways. One method which you can see if to lie one infront of the other standing up. This then makes the player step over the cylinder before making the hit. Equally, you could replace this with a teammate lying on the floor for presentation practice.

Further more, when practicing rolling the player off the ball or ruck situations, I place two cylinders on the floor with one lying over the other. This is a great drill for getting players to grip and role the player safely.

As things progress, the use of the GoLo Rugby pads to really focus on the technique.

Give these a go!

As many of you know, concussion awareness is some that I am passionate about. Rugby is a contact sport and as a result the impact and risk of injury increases, I am not denying that.

What I have an issue with is coaches not being educated enough within the game to teach children how to be safe within the contact elements of the game.

This is not an easy fix, as clubs are pushed to get coaches in and getting onto the right training course is very difficult.

HEADCASE is something that the RFU have set up to help coaches and is vital for anyone teaching rugby.

A common misconception is that coaches don't need to redo this once completed, but this should be revisited every year and Heads of Rugby/clubs should be keeping a track of which coaches have/haven't completed this yet.

Preseason and the beginning of the season has been a challenge for us as a school due to the weather! I have never been so pleased to have seen rain as I was last week.

With fixtures looming and limited excuses, this training with pads worked a treat.

I started with two channels, in between the yellow and blue mats, designed to focus on left and right shoulder.

I started with the wheels, with a focus on head positioning and that 45 degree angle of the tackle.

Then I used the and GoLo Rugby on the players. I like using both of these as they offer different zones for the players to aim for. I use the Gilberts for higher tackles and then the GoLo's for the lower tackles.

If you would be interested in either, then please let me know and I can put you in touch with the relevant people.

Be careful with your contact at the moment, keep monitoring the rain and plan properly!
