Anglers at a Co Antrim river have raised concerns that its ecosystem is facing a “slow death” as a result of a 500m-stretch of water drying up each year for the past decade.

Following inspection, Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) has confirmed a presence of blue-green algae at Ballyronan Marina .

The algae can make people ill and can be potentially fatal for pets.

Please:
🚫 Stay out of the water
🚫 Avoid contact with the affected areas
🚫 Keep dogs on leads
🚫 Farmers and pet owners should not let livestock or pets swim in or drink from the water.
