Wednesday 17th club racing
Any risk of a depleted turnout for Wednesday racing due to the impending start of England’s World Cup was negated by an excellent weather forecast, with those participating enjoying warm and sunny conditions and a great range of winds in the circa 8-15 kts range.
Nonetheless, Martin as RO was obviously well briefed that some might want a quick turnaround to get home for the 9pm kick off and obliged with a prompt 6:30 start for the first race, resulting in a few boats still launching during the starting sequence and leaving Dave S to comment that he was the master of being first in the car park but last to the start line!
A long triangle course made good use of the wind direction, which was at the stronger end of the range for race 1. The first start was deceptive with a subtle port bias giving a good benefit to those who noticed it and dropped down to that end.
Ali’s Musto disappeared off down the track with the Shilling RS400 in pursuit, the asymmetrics making good use of being able to fly their kites all the way downwind. Greg (ILCA7) and John (Hadron) had a good battle all the way round, just ahead of the rest of the fleet in pursuit.
The wind direction was oscillating more for race 2 and swung left slightly requiring a change of windward mark. Again the line was port biased, and a well timed shift left just before the start gave a big benefit to those down at the pin and allowed some to tack off early and cross the fleet. The wind was now reducing and the shifts were bigger than race 1, so it paid to keep an eye on the lifts and headers and make sure you were on the right tack. Once again Ali put his foot down, I think managing to lap everyone bar the other Musto and the 400, to win by over 2 minutes on corrected. Greg and John had an even closer battle this time, separated by a second on the line. The ILCA6’s managed to stay close to the frontrunners, with Gareth securing an excellent 2nd place on corrected time.
Particular mention to Ali and Harriet in the Mirror, Harriet only just starting on her club racing journey but achieving an excellent 10th place in race 1, further bettered by a 6th in race 2.
The weather for Wednesday racing this year has been consistently excellent, good winds, plenty of warm sunshine and barely a drifter in sight. If you've not yet got involved, you have been missing out.
