Southampton University Sailing Club

Southampton University Sailing Club Welcome to the official page for sailing at the University of Southampton. Which are used for fleet race training and the national circuit.

Wessex Sailing club is the official student sailing club at the University of Southampton. We welcome sailors of all abilities and have several divisions that are sure to meet your experience level and interests. BEGINNERS SAILING
For those of you who have come to Southampton to try something completely new, why not take the RYA Level 1 Course and learn to sail with us at a heavily discounted pric

e. CASUAL SAILING
This section of the club allows you to get out on the water to improve your skills whilst sailing a variety of different boats, ranging from Laser Picos to 49ers. We run a session every week and normally alternate between beginner/ progression sessions and advanced / performance sailing afternoons. We also have the ability to co-run a variety of RYA courses throughout the year at a discounted price if there is enough demand. For more information, see our casual group here:

FLEET RACING
We are the only university to boast a 3 boat fleet of race ready RS200s. In addition,
Many of our members have their own boats in Southampton and sail them regularly. Last year, a very strong team of 22 sailors in boats ranging from Fireflies to RS800's and Lasers represented University of Southampton in the BUSA Fleet Racing Nationals. We have an excellent record, winning medals in both the handicap and the Firefly fleet in recent years. Look out for more details about the BUSA Fleet Nationals on this page over the coming weeks. TEAM RACING
At Southampton we have 4 mixed teams and 2 ladies teams that compete in events throughout the year with probably the most successful university sailing club in history, having won silver at the BUSA Team Racing Finals in 2007 and gold and bronze in 2008 and silver again in 2009, 2010 and 2011. The end of the 2012 season saw Southampton regain the championship title with SOTON 2 winning the gold and SOTON 1 bringing home the bronze. Congratulations! We train every Wednesday afternoon at Spinnaker Club. YACHTING
The yachting section is divided into cruising and racing sections which operate on alternate Wednesdays. The cruising section allows members to go for an afternoon sail on the Solent and maybe have a meal on the Isle of Wight. Beginners are welcome. There are also opportunities to work towards the RYA qualifications in seamanship including day skipper and Yachtmaster. The racing section is a chance for us to train our teams for the BUSA Yachting Nationals that take place over Easter, fine tuning skills in trimming and tactics. A lot of our members have gone on to be involved in the RYA Keelboat Program and Yacht Racing Academy. We also have a lot of contacts with private yacht owners in the area, who are often looking for crew members to go out racing at weekends from the Hamble. For more information, see our yachting group here:

The Fruzz arived in London ready (despite their name being changed to Solent Fruzz due to unprecedented reasons) with 3 of the crews brand new to team racing, and 1 helm who was only on his second try…
Day one saw some overjoyous reactions to race results, but also saw major dissapointment in others. With 5 wins from 8 races they hoped to secure a place in gold fleet 🤞
Day two started off a little rough, with some of the Fruzz still spiritually in central London, they hit the water strong with 2 race losses💔 With only 4 races left to qualify for semi’s they had to pull something out the hat… 🎩 which ended up being another loss 😔 However their next race was a win!
At the close of gold fleet, the Fruzz were 2/6, which put them joint 4th!

This was followed up by a 1,3,4 in the repechage, and then two 1,2,5’s in the semi’s… They found themselves in the final🥳
By winning the first final in a 1,2,6, and losing the second in a 1,4,6… It came down to the last race…
After a gorgeous gybe back performed by the hero of the event, they placed FIRST!! 🏆
Thank you for such a fun event!!

Last weekend was a busy one for our sailors!! With all 5 of our teams away at different events, 2 of them made their way to Oxford for some windy racing⛵️💨

Tough competition found Southampton Greens in 11th, Southampton Reds in 16th, and the Wessex Wombles in 3rd! 👵👴

Big thank you to for hosting

12 of the team racing squad had a great and successful weekend in Cardiff, with some great sailing on display and some quality nights out⛵️🕺

Much success was had on the water with the Green team finishing 1st, only dropping 1 race all weekend💪 and the Red team ending in 5th after some unfortunate races just before the semis🫣

Huge thank you to everyone who helped run and organise the event! ✨ can’t wait for next year!!

Last weekend, 25 of our sailors took the long trip up to Durham for the first chance of the year to get some medals, at the BUCS Fleet Racing Championships!! 🏆
After Terry and his minions loaded the 6 stacker on Thursday, we were all ready for the 10 hour drive up on Friday. This led into registration and a social on Friday evening.

After unloading our: 9 fireflies, 3 RS200s and ILCA, it was time for Racing! The first day bought shifty conditions from 7-15 knots throughout the day. We managed to complete 3 races in both the firefly and fast handicap fleets, ending the day strong with 4 fireflies in the top 10 of a 51 boat fleet. Ready for the college bar crawl that evening💪🍻

Day 2 bought similar conditions with big shifts making it difficult for the RC to lay a consistent course. Despite this, they managed to get 2 races in for all fleets to round off the event with 5 races.

✨Overall, we claimed 3rd in the team prize with Terry Hacker/Rosie Davies( 5th), Jack Woolterton/Lucy Street (7th) and Rachel Harper/Alex Paton (9th). Jack and Rachel also received a free entry each to the 80th Firefly nationals this year for being the highest male and female helms to have not competed at the event yet. Rachel and Alex were also the first female helm/boat in the firefly fleet!✨

Big thank you to for hosting and BUSA for organising such a great event, can’t wait to see you next year! And a special thank you to for helping us with trailers and minibuses!!

Last weekend we sent two teams out west to the Plymouth Pasty!✨
The Hot Pinks wore their classically dazzling outfits once again 🩷 and our new development squad made their first outing of the year as Southampton Fruzz!
After a spooky Halloween social on the friday night, both teams had a good first day with Hot Pink joint 1st on 100% of the races, and The Fruzz in 9th with 50%💪
The second day kicked off with a top of the table clash between Hot Pink and Bristol Black, which the Hot Pinks won in a 125🏆
The Fruzz continued sailing well on the second day, including a very close race against the eventual winners Bristol Red.
🌟In the end, Southampton Hot Pink finished 2nd to Bristol Red, after a capsize and 1 boat over in their race together🥈 Southampton Fruzz finished 10th on 44% wins, a great result for their first event!! 🥳

Overall a fun weekend, Thank you very much to for hosting and organising such a fun event!⛵️🌊
