Gear indexing — one of those things that makes a huge difference to how a bike
feels to ride, but is often overlooked until something goes wrong.
If your gears are hesitating, skipping, or refusing to shift cleanly, the problem is
almost always cable tension. It’s one of the most satisfying adjustments to make
because the improvement is instant and obvious.
The good news: it takes about minutes to sort out, and it transforms how a bike
rides.
Does your bike have any annoying niggles you’ve been putting up with? Sometimes
the fix is simpler than you’d expect.

Some bikes just stop you in your tracks when they come through the door.
This Orro came in for a Gold service a while back — and it’s one of those bikes
that’s clearly been loved. You can tell a lot about a rider from the condition of their
bike. This one had been looked after, but the drivetrain was ready for some
attention after a long season.
Sent it back out the door running silently. That’s the job done right.
What is the nicest bike you have ever owned or ridden? I’d genuinely love to hear
about it.

Let’s settle a debate for the Newcastle cycling community.
When you are riding around the city or out into Northumberland, what is the one
piece of cycling gear you absolutely refuse to leave the house without?
Is it a specific multi-tool? A favourite jacket? A lucky pair of socks?

ne question I get asked more than almost any other: “How do I know when my
brake pads need replacing?”
Here is the honest answer. Most brake pads have a wear indicator line — a small
groove or ridge on the pad surface. When that groove disappears, the pad needs
replacing. If you can’t see a groove, hold the pad up to the light and look at the
thickness. Less than ‒mm of compound remaining means it’s time.
For rim brakes, you can also look for a shiny, glazed surface on the pad — that’s a
sign they’ve hardened and lost grip.
Does your bike have rim brakes or disc brakes? And when did you last check them?

This kind of message genuinely makes my week.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
“Absolutely brilliant service. Dropped my bike off on Monday and it was ready by
Wednesday — better than it’s ever ridden. Honest, knowledgeable, and great value.
Won’t go anywhere else.”
Fast turnarounds are something I take real pride in. Most standard services are back
with their owners within ‒ days.

This little Isla Bike came in for a tune-up recently — and it reminded me
how important it is to get kids on well-maintained bikes from the start.
A bike that shifts smoothly and brakes reliably gives young riders the confidence to
actually enjoy cycling, rather than fighting the bike the whole time.
Did you cycle as a kid? And are your children or grandchildren cyclists? Would love
to know if cycling is something that gets passed down in families around here.

You don’t see one of these every day!
This Genesis fat bike was a brilliant change of pace in the workshop. Those massive
tyres run at incredibly low pressures, allowing the bike to float over sand, snow, and
deep mud where a normal mountain bike would sink.
It’s a great reminder of how versatile bicycles can be. Whatever you ride, there’s a
bike built specifically for it.
What is the strangest or most unusual bike you have ever seen out on the trails or
roads?

Some bikes are built for racing, and some are built for real life.
This Licorne City bike came through the workshop recently. It’s not carbon fibre, and it doesn’t have electronic gears. It’s a solid, everyday bike that gets ridden hard in all
weathers to get its owner where they need to go.
These are often the most satisfying bikes to work on, because a good service makes
such a massive difference to how they ride.
Do you use your bike for commuting, fitness, or recreation?

A question for the Newcastle cycling community — and I genuinely want to know
the answer.
What is the one thing that has put you off getting your bike serviced at a local shop?
Was it cost? Waiting times? Not knowing what to ask for? Or something else
entirely?
There are no wrong answers here. Understanding what people find dif f icult about
bike maintenance and repairs helps me make Steel Town Cycles a better place to
bring your bike.

Here is a quick tip that will save you money in the long run.

A dirty chain is not just unpleasant — it acts like sandpaper on your cassette and
chainrings. A chain that costs £‒10-35 to replace, if left to wear out, will take a £20 - 100
cassette with it.
The fix is simple: wipe your chain down after every wet ride and apply a fresh drop
of l**e. Takes two minutes. That’s it.
What chain l**e are you currently using? Wet l**e, dry l**e, or something else
entirely? Always interested to hear what people swear by up here in the North East.
