Tim Isherwood Open Water Swimming, I describe myself as a Swimmer: Swimming is a life skill that stays for the who

I started swimming as a three year old in a freezing Park Hall Pool at Little Hayfield, moving on to river swims and Ocean swims off Coogee Beach. I volunteer to teach school children to swim: this is vital because we must pass on our knowledge.

The school children from our school lessons took part in our local Swimathon at the weekend. Representatives from Years 4, 5 & 6. A great effort in swimming 130 lengths! Some had never swum more than 1 length before and ended up by swimming more than 250 metres. How fantastic!!

A slow walk along the track from the level crossing, through the mass of Sea Pinks and across the sand to the island, no longer an island at low tide. This year there is only one tidal pool but plenty of sunshine that warms the top layer of the water. Ynys Gifftan a wonderful place to swim.

Swimming in a secluded river can be quite magical. Before the lockdowns I swam here in the company of herons and kingfishers and will be returning this summer.

How fit do I need to be to swim in Open Water?
Society creates a misconception that sport, any sport can only be attempted if it's a competition. The focus on PBs and FKTs (excuse the TLAs!) has created a barrier for many people to swim. We are all unique and to just take part is a significant achievement for many and should be celebrated. We are not all destined to stand on top of an Olympic podium or play professional sport. We all have to make a conscious decision to start and the fitness will then come.

What was the most important skill you learnt when you were first learning to swim? I believe it was learning to float

07/12/2020

Swimming is a life skill that we can practice for the whole of our lives. Everyone should learn to swim and everyone should experience swimming in open water at least once in their life.

I will show you how, whether it be in the pool or open water. You will never regret the experience.

I am a qualified STA Level 2 Open Water Swim Coach and Swim England Level 2 Swimming Teacher.
