Preparing a young horse for archery we need to be certain they can cope with random things going on above them . So took the opportunity on a breezy day to play about with a flag.

The next stage of teaching a horse archery from the ground is walking and shooting.

The horse should NOT be rushing to get passed you as this could be dangerous. If its possible have another person help you with this stage, one leads while the other shoots, the leading person needs to stay on the none shooting side of the horse and keep a safe distance away from the person shooting in case of any unexpected reactions.

Take time to notice your horses reaction and only shot when you are certain they are comfortable and relaxed with the situation. It might be necessary to go back a stage or two until you are sure they are ready to proceed.

If you're in doubt with any part of this process please seek professional help, from either me or one of our many BHAA qualified coaches.

Training horses to horseback archery.

Stage 2 : Your horse must be comfortable with the sound of clattering arrows, it's important to achieve this on the ground first (you don't want your horse bolting down the archery run trying to escape from this sound.)
Carbon arrows also make less sound than aluminium so that's another option from wooden arrows.
