On a day when conditions at cold Ashby were about as perfect as golfers could dream of, the Club Championship has burst into life with a thrilling three-way tie at the top after Round One.
Harvey produced the round of the day on the back nine, setting the course alight with four birdies in a dazzling display to charge into a share of the lead.
Stu Nicholas endured a rollercoaster start of birdie, bogey, double bogey, but true to form, the ever-reliable campaigner showed his class. He steadied the ship superbly and battled back with a pair of birdies to complete the back nine in one-under-par and join the leaders. Lewis also showed his fighting spirit. A costly double bogey at the 14th could have derailed his round, but he bounced back in spectacular fashion, holing out for a stunning eagle two at the 15th to keep himself firmly in the hunt.
Lurking ominously just two shots behind is four-time champion Graham Bott. Three birdies helped him compile a mixed but impressive round of 73, keeping him firmly in contention as he chases yet another title.
With perfect conditions, big names in the hunt, and little separating the field, the stage is set for a fascinating second round next week.
