Week 3 of the North Essex Friendly Alliance League took place at Stanway Rovers Football Club, which included a Clash of the Titans when our Over 50s took on our Over 60s. In a closely fought contest the 60s secured a 1-0 win over the 'youngsters'.

This week, the Over 50s played four games, winning 1, drawing 2 and losing 1. They now sit 7th in the league with 12 points, having played 9 games.

The over 60s played three games, winning all 3 by a 1-0 scoreline. They are now 2nd in the league table with 18 points from 8 games, 3 points behind leaders, Little Oakley.

Special thanks to all the Stanway players who volunteered to set up/take down the pitches and marshall the car parking.

The Strollers competed in the latest round of the Sunday Social league at Foxash last Sunday and were unbeaten in four games.

We won three and drew one, scoring four goals (Phil Robson 2, Steve Ho**er 2) and conceding none.

What was especially pleasing was that we played some very good football and Lee Clifton kept a clean sheet.

We had a delighted manager in Roger Cable, who kindly bought the beers afterwards.

Excellent first outing for the fledgling over 70s squad today at Little Oakley. Walton failed to turn up, so we played 3 x 20 minute games. Playing to EWFA rules it took us a little while to adjust to unlimited touches, but we soon found our feet and competed well.

We lost all three, but played some very good football at times. Derrick Saddler eventually found his scoring mojo and netted 4 times, twice from penalties.

Little Oakley were great hosts and it looks like we will return in August for another round of games.

Special thanks Stuart Hardy, Trevor Britton and Richard Cowen for their support.

Our final set of games on our Spanish tour was a 4-team round robin tournament at Polideportivo in Daya Vieja. The referees for this tournament were Barry Barnes, a former Football League referee, and our very own Essy Eslamian. We were briefed by Barry Barnes on the rules, but were highly sceptical after what had happened the previous day.

Our first game was against Lions Fortuna, opponents who had beaten us in yesterday’s tournament. After about 15 seconds they had been penalised for ‘not walking’ and it was obvious that we had a referee who was going to strictly abide by the WFA rules. We won this comprehensively 3-1 with a hattrick from ‘Pistol’ Pete Ellis and playing excellent walking football. We won the next game against Hondon Valley Flyers 2-0, before losing to our hosts, Esquina Park Rangers 3-0, fielding a team that ensured all of the squad members got game time. Our 6 points ensured that we made the final. Again we faced our hosts, Esquina Park Rangers and after finishing as a 1-1 draw, it went to a penalty shoot-out, which finished 3-3 and it was agreed that we share the spoils.

The highlight of this tournament was the exceptional refereeing from Barry Barnes. We later found out that he had been a league official back in the 1970s and had refereed a match involving Derby County when managed by Brian Clough.

We all retired to a local bar for refreshments, before travelling back to Villamartin and our final evening meal together. Highlights of the tour included Essy’s driving skills, Trevor Britton’s sunburnt nose, Ian McD and Phil McC’s rather camp dancing skills, Terry C’s silver tongue, Dave G’s AI-assisted re-rendering of Frank Sinatra’s My Way and the ‘excellent’ work of the Wellbeing team.

Special thanks to Phil McCusker for organising a brilliant tour; it was a blast.

Our second set of games of our Spanish tour was a 6-team round robin tournament at Poliesportiu Pilar la Horadada. After an intensive briefing by the referees on the rules, especially the not walking rule, we were looking forward to a more typical walking football competition. However, it quickly became obvious that the briefing was advisory. This tournament was more like 5-a-side for the over 50s than walking football under WFA rules.

No sugar coating and certainly not sour grapes, we finished bottom of the table with a single draw, four defeats, 6 goals and a couple of injuries. However, overall it was an enjoyable event and got better when we all returned to The Hub, a sports bar in Villamartin Plaza, for food, rehydration liquids and a live Ska band. As the day turned into evening there was some very dodgy and camp Dad Dancing by certain members of the squad. A great end to the day.

Tournament day today.

Not the most auspicious set of results, but we did score 6 goals, Ian McD saved two penalties and we were strong enough to support the other five teams above us.

But we’re not downhearted; it’s been a great craic for the entire group and more games tomorrow.

We’re up and running (well, not walking) in sunny Spain. First friendly was ‘interesting’ and we did win the final 20 minutes 1-0; in the first 40 minutes we didn’t. However a great introduction to walking football over here. It gets serious from tomorrow 😆.

It was another good weekend for Stanway Rovers Women's Walking Football team. In the second round of fixtures in the EWWFL Championship, played at Baddow High School in Chelmsford, they won 2, drew 3 and lost 2. They now sit third in the league with 19 points from 14 games.

Nicola Lay scored both goals in the 2-1 win against Billericay Town Reds with Anja Warburton and Dee Boothman netting in the 2-0 win over Valley Green Emeralds.
