Our final set of games on our Spanish tour was a 4-team round robin tournament at Polideportivo in Daya Vieja. The referees for this tournament were Barry Barnes, a former Football League referee, and our very own Essy Eslamian. We were briefed by Barry Barnes on the rules, but were highly sceptical after what had happened the previous day.
Our first game was against Lions Fortuna, opponents who had beaten us in yesterday’s tournament. After about 15 seconds they had been penalised for ‘not walking’ and it was obvious that we had a referee who was going to strictly abide by the WFA rules. We won this comprehensively 3-1 with a hattrick from ‘Pistol’ Pete Ellis and playing excellent walking football. We won the next game against Hondon Valley Flyers 2-0, before losing to our hosts, Esquina Park Rangers 3-0, fielding a team that ensured all of the squad members got game time. Our 6 points ensured that we made the final. Again we faced our hosts, Esquina Park Rangers and after finishing as a 1-1 draw, it went to a penalty shoot-out, which finished 3-3 and it was agreed that we share the spoils.
The highlight of this tournament was the exceptional refereeing from Barry Barnes. We later found out that he had been a league official back in the 1970s and had refereed a match involving Derby County when managed by Brian Clough.
We all retired to a local bar for refreshments, before travelling back to Villamartin and our final evening meal together. Highlights of the tour included Essy’s driving skills, Trevor Britton’s sunburnt nose, Ian McD and Phil McC’s rather camp dancing skills, Terry C’s silver tongue, Dave G’s AI-assisted re-rendering of Frank Sinatra’s My Way and the ‘excellent’ work of the Wellbeing team.
Special thanks to Phil McCusker for organising a brilliant tour; it was a blast.
