How do you innovate? I mean REALLY invent better ways to work, to be productive, to serve your customers, to make your staff happier?
Did you know we've become a professional world scared to take risks?
Our ability to take well thought out risks is at an all time low, which means we are becoming more reliant on small wins that are less likely to make any lasting change to team, business, management or you.
So how do you think differently AND TAKE ACTION?
I start with crazy.
I get teams to dream big and daft.
I ask "If anything would help what would you do?"
In one session a team suggested they have Puppy Friday and while that's totally unrealistic on further probing they realised they just needed a bit of space and time. And that could easily be achieved, and thus Cake Friday was launched. Once every 2 weeks for 1 hour they talked about anything but work and ate cake - the knock on effects with the coaching process we used was phenomenal!
Another client was working long hours and things in their industry are so fast paced they were struggling to learn the new AI, market their company, look after their growing teams needs (and their training) and not get home at midnight! We didn't actually clone the client, or double the staff but we did look at the layout of the office and how it didn't benefit them, their team or their communication and all because we started by talking about making it Christmas every month!
Another occasion the boss made it clear to me before hand "Mandie, there is NO MORE MONEY, so don't talk money." So we talked money.....as the boss glared at me like I was hell on their head, by facing the elephant in the room we could start to see what money would do for the team. And what that team really wanted was to be seen.
To feel valued.
The bosses was now grinning at me as they told me that this was easily achieved. They loved their team and so things were put into place so the team knew how much they were appreciated - and profits went up as a result. We hadn't even started with profits as our primary goal!
You see, when the mind is allowed to wander and not stay in the depths of the problem, it will invent solutions.
So if you want puppies in the office, the real question is, what does that give you? What does that solve? What does that stop you from looking at?
What really needs fixing?
