The countdown is on to the 13 Valleys Ultra Weekend at the end of September, and Derwent AC is going to be very well represented!

We’ve got DAC runners taking on every distance on offer:

🏃‍♀️ 2 Valleys – 21km
⛰️ 5 Valleys – 58km
🔥 7 Valleys – 110km
🤯 13 Valleys – 180km

And today, a group of DACers got together for a route recce, tackling the section from Legburthwaite to Keswick.

That’s 23km and 550m+ of ascent in the bag as they start getting themselves ready for the big weekend! 👏

Good luck to everyone taking part — we can’t wait to follow your progress! 🙌🏔️

September’s chosen parkruns are Whitehaven and Bower Park!

All Derwent AC runners are invited to take part in either (or both!) of these parkruns during September and submit their highest age-graded percentage.

Your result will be added to our championship spreadsheet, and at the end of the year, the male and female runner with the highest overall age-graded percentage across all of our chosen local parkruns will win a prize!

And the best bit? You don’t have to be the fastest to win! 🙌

Age grading compares your performance against the world’s best for your age and gender, so you’re effectively racing against everyone in your age bracket. It gives everyone a chance to compete, regardless of pace or ability.

So get yourself down to Whitehaven parkrun or Bower Park parkrun this month and see what percentage you can clock up!

HUGE congratulations to Lucy, who today completed the incredible Sea to Summit Ultra!

Starting and finishing at Seascale, but ticking off the summit of Scafell Pike, Lucy tackled an epic 53km route taking in trail, bog, fell, scree, road and even sand!

With around 5,600m of ascent, that’s a staggering 119m of climbing for every kilometre!

And as if completing that wasn’t impressive enough… Lucy finished 6th female!

What an absolutely incredible achievement. Massive congratulations, Lucy!

⚠️ SESSION CHANGE ⚠️

3RD SEPTEMBER - SETMURTHY TRAILS

The weather this evening looks pretty awful for the originally planned Melbreak run.

We have changed the session to Setmurthy so we have more shelter and more options. This will still be an off road trail run, with a few efforts thrown in for good measure.

The meet point will be the main gate at Setmurthy for a 18:30 (Cockermouth side, not Isel side).

Spond has been updated - Hope to see you there

When we added the Barrow Fell Race/Keswick Show Race to this year’s club championships, we weren’t quite sure how popular it would be. After all, it’s a tough little challenge!

Starting from the main arena at the Keswick Show, the 6.5km route heads up Stile End before descending Barrow, with a whopping 425m of ascent along the way. And just to make things interesting, there’s even a river crossing near the finish!

10 brave DACers took on the challenge: Alistair, James, Matt, Jason, Dave, Dan, Elizabeth, Isobel, Nic and Debbie.

A special shout-out to Alistair, who secured a fantastic top 10 finish, Isobel who won an age category prize, and to Dan, who took on his first ever fell race!

Team DAC males came 2nd and Team DAC ladies came 3rd too.

And it wasn’t just the runners getting involved. Richard, Alan, Sammy, Pete, Sophie, Hannah and Naomi were there cheering everyone in and providing plenty of support from the sidelines.

Well done everyone!

Marathon training is going brilliantly for Connor and Stef!

Today they took on The Golden Ball 20 (aka Trimpell 20), a tough 20-mile road race around Lancaster.

Stef set himself a target pace and came in comfortably under it, which is fantastic pacing and a great confidence boost! He also came 4th overall!

Connor had an equally brilliant day, knocking over 5 minutes off his current 30k PB! Even more impressive considering he also got stung by a wasp during the race! 🐝

The training is clearly paying off. Roll on Berlin! 🇩🇪

The final chance to tick off Whinlatter Forest parkrun and Maryport Prom parkrun for this year’s parkrun Club Championships.

It was our last opportunity to get these two events in the championship before we mix things up for the final few months of the year.

We had a great turnout across both events, with Tom, Anthony, Kevin, Debbie, Sheena, Lucy and Joanne taking on Maryport parkrun, while James, Stephen, Jason, Sammy, Nick, Nic, Lindsay, Joe and Naomi headed up to Whinlatter.

A huge well done to everyone who got out there and earned themselves another championship result!

📣 A little reminder: please make sure your parkrun profile says you run for Derwent AC. It makes collecting and calculating the results soooo much easier! 🙌

With Keswick parkrun closing for a while, we’ve had to shake things up for the rest of the year:

🔹 September: Bower Park parkrun & Whitehaven parkrun
🔹 October: Workington parkrun & Cockermouth Greenway parkrun
🔹 November: Keswick parkrun
🔹 December: 🏆 Medal time!

In December, we’ll be awarding medals to the male and female with the highest average age-graded percentage across the year, along with 2nd and 3rd place medals.

So there’s still plenty of time to get those championship results in… and the leaderboard could definitely still change! 👀🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️

Keep running, keep collecting those results and let’s see who comes out on top! 🏆

Our penultimate track session at Whitehaven Track this evening, and Coach Phil certainly put us through our paces!

After taking us through our warm-up drills, we got stuck into tonight’s session, which was all about FINISHING STRONG.

The main set was:
🏃 300m
🏃 200m
🏃 100m
⏱️ 60 seconds recovery between each effort

Then repeat! 🥵

It was all about pushing our bodies and lungs hard, learning to keep working when the legs are tired and finishing those efforts strongly. And yes... it definitely hurt!

But that’s what these sessions are all about — getting stronger, fitter and more confident with every session.

Now we’re looking forward to next month’s session, when we get to see just how much we’ve improved on our 800m times from May. 👀

Bring on the retest! 💪🔥

🔥 BONUS TRACK SESSION – FINISH STRONG! 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️

We’re into the final session before the big “retest” and this one is all about finishing strong! 💪

The main session is:

🏃 300m
⏱️ 60 secs rest
🏃 200m
⏱️ 60 secs rest
🏃 100m
⏱️ 3 mins rest

🔁 Repeat x3

These sessions are REALLY starting to show results for the runners who are consistently turning up and putting in the work.

Just look at Louisa! 👏 She was struggling to break 30 minutes for parkrun, but her last THREE parkruns have all been sub-28 minutes! 🤯 And she’s recently knocked a whopping 40 seconds off her 5k PB! 🔥

That’s what happens when you keep showing up, put the work in and trust the process. 💪

So, who’s joining us for the final push before the retest? Come and get those legs moving, finish strong and see what all that hard work has been building towards! 👊
