I have created a team of actual experts from degree qualified and registered nutritionists & psychologists to a team member that has lost an incredible amount of weight and made fitness her lyfestyle. It’s truly bonkers that celebrates its birthday today.

1 Year on from opening the doors.

I remember dropping back off at her dad’s house to train her clients in the garage when we very first met.

I remember being handed a drill and asked to put TV brackets up, mirrors and hooks in Square One 1.0 at the Oaks Garden Centre.

(May I add they certainly all fell down)

Watching from afar as Emma survived the pandemic coaching clients outside in the cold, pi***ng rain and whatever else the British weather threw at her.

To being handed her notice and left with a fork in the road:

- Go Back To The Garage
- Go One Bigger

If there’s one thing you’re yet to learn about Emma it’s this -

She’ll do anything for the clients at Square One.

She’ll hide behind the scenes. Tuck herself away behind her computer or phone supporting every single client and never takes an ounce of success or a single compliment.

But, I think we can all agree on something…

She’s single-handedly created not only the greatest community of humans I think I have ever been a part of

But,

One of the greatest Small Group Personal Training Gyms in the country.

And, her relentless drive to make it better for every single member, every single day is a testament to how much she cares about the people walking through the door.

Reflecting On The Week I Turned 28…

Here are 28 things I have compiled over the last year from thoughts, books & podcasts that I go back to on a daily basis:

- The Life Timeline
There’s a hidden timeline in which the world believes you must adhere to. Degree. House. Marriage. Kids. Everyone’s timeline is different. Create yours & forget the ‘rat race’

- Spend Time Alone
In ’23 I’ve probably spent the most time alone than any other year. I’ve trained, ran, worked & listened to my own self-talk. Mastering your thoughts = mental confidence.

- No One Saves You.
Everything is your fault. Accept total responsibility.

- Without Health, You Have Nothing.

- Stay Curious. Question Everything

- Better Is Opinion. Different Is Fact. Different & Better = optimal

- Set Boundaries
Having the ability to say ‘no’ is a superpower.

- Problems
The longer you wait, the bigger they become.

- Find Burnout
At least once. Learn where the edge is. Then flirt with that tightrope forever.

- Managing Fatigue Is A Skill
Being able to move, think & breath whilst tired and then spending energy where it is most needed is a skill worth mastering.

- You Will Fail.

- Productivity Triplet.
Noise-cancelling headphones. Instrumental music. Running timer that stops every time you break.

- Hold onto inspirational people, even if it is an inconvenience for you.

- Be the best partner possible. No matter what.

- Get Outside More.

- Dogs make everything exponentially better.

- Accept Your Flaws. But, work on them.

- You’ll Gain No Friends Speaking Your Mind

- But, you’ll gain the right friends, speaking your mind.

- It’s never pretty. But, life doesn’t wait for pretty.

- Create the perfect day, the night before.

- Invest in a bean to cup coffee machine for your home.

- Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows sold 4.6 million copies (2nd highest-grossing fiction book) it has 8.3k 1 star reviews. Moral - you can’t please everyone.

- It’s hard to beat the person who shows up every single day.

- Get comfortable with rejection.

- Using past negative experiences as drive is toxic. But, powerful.

- Win. At Your Game.

- Coffee Is Life.

A very fine gentleman named who won’t mind me saying but he’s almost 60 (I mean 50 🤣)

He is a walking example of someone who has dedicated years of their life to looking after their health.

Not only does he look leaner than this picture right now.

But, he runs two successful businesses

Has children.

And, he’s just gone and qualified for the…

CrossFit European Championship Finals 🚀

A bloke who not only looks healthy

But,

Can perform as well!!

Whilst, Gords is a coach himself, in the Hall Of Fame for Tae kwon do (World & European Champion)

To put it lightly he knows a thing or two about training & nutrition.

He came to me seeking a bit of guidance.

A bit of helping joining the dots.

A little improvement in performance and recovery.

I’m not joking when I say from Day 1 this bloke did everything I asked.

I haven’t even coached him! I’ve just supported. He actions things on auto now without me having to tell him.

Whilst, I’ll milk this for all it’s worth saying I have helped Gords qualify for the European Champs the geezer works fu***ng hard, day in day out! That’s what achieved this.

I can wait to see him take the win in the finals in November 🚀

Something we are seeing more and more unfortunately is a lot of copy and paste jobs

Setting up one client with a training program

And then copy and pasting it across to the next

And, so on…

They’ll play this off “99% of people should be doing the same thing”

Yada, yada!!

As you can see from this awesome message from my client.

They are immediately seeing a benefit from having a training program that is actually based around their injuries, their goals, their data and one that specially moves them towards their goals 💪🏽

It’s just a bonus they are 5 weeks in and have just retested with a 10kg squat personal best

Where confidence and competence don’t always see eye-to-eye 👀

Brace yourselves for a hilarious journey through the world of performance nutrition 🏋️‍♀️

I apologise in advance if this touches a nerve!

Right now, you’re probably doing a decent job.

You’re one of the top athletes in your CrossFit box…

You’ve done a hyrox here or there…

You’re the local hero on Strava…

By all accounts, you are an ‘everyday athlete’ 💪🏽

But, your “recovery” smoothie tastes like a melted crayon.

Your Whoop is costing you £30 a month, but, what’s it actually done for you?

And… your dedication to that program you signed up to is about as long as an Instagram story.

I get it! You feel like you train your arse off day in day out. Some days you even double dip.

But, you feel as if the results from your hard work are somewhat underwhelming.

You feel like you know what you should be doing, but, something just isn’t quite clicking.

Rather than searching for the next shiny object like:

A whoop
An ice bath
Electrolyte tabs

Why not go back to the drawing board. Objectively look at what you’re doing without the emotion attached and have an honest chat with yourself about what you should be doing.

But, you can run a marathon quickly and confidently with a nutritionist in your corner 🚀

This particular client was the self-proclaimed running and nutrition guru who thought he had everything figured out 🤓

(I wouldn’t say this if he hadn’t used these words himself 🤣)

From endless debates on carb-loading to “scientifically proven” methods for nutrition protocols. He was ‘supposedly’ the go-to guy for unsolicited advice.

But, hey, we all love a confident enthusiast, right?

He came to me having continuously struggled to break the elusive 90-minute half marathon barrier.

Always finding that from 15km onwards he’d hit a wall and end up coasting home because he had nothing left to give.

Turns out there’s a big difference between social media experts and having a personalised strategy tailored to your unique needs.

Who knew, right?

I’m doing this gentleman an injustice because since our first call he’s scrapped all that he ‘knew’ and has taken every single piece of advice, knowledge and info

And, actioned it day in day out!

He’s achieved himself a sub 90-minute half marathon and 100kg bench press as a topper 🚀

It’s a fear we all have!

We work so hard in the gym. With our running. Cycling. Or whatever our domains of movement are.

To then be forced through either:

Work
Injury
Holiday

Or some other reason… to take a break from training!

Our first thought is always. Oh my…

I’m going to lose all of my fitness, my gains, my muscles.

“I’ve worked so hard for this and it’s going to be so hard when I return”

Well…

New science suggests that there’s actually very little that will occur from a month off training.

If anything you’ll come back with improved performance from having a rest and allowing the body to recover.

So,

The next time you stress and worry about losing all of gains from having time off.

Relax ☺️

Read It & Read It Again 🥹

This was such a beautiful message to receive this morning from one of my clients.

Not only has she drastically changed her body…

She’s completely transformed her and her families lives. To be:

✅ Healthier
✅ Happier
✅ More Productive

The quote she brings up “if a house is built on sh*tty foundations, it will fall down”

Is something I say to every client on our first ever meeting. Probably because I feel the need to justify why it is so basic.

But,

In all honesty…

The basics work 🔥

When done time & time again.

This client for 8 months straight and repeatedly done the basics.

Has she:

- Eaten out? Yes
- Enjoyed Easter? Yes
- Gone on two holidays? Yes
- Had a birthday? Yes
- Been on a hen do? Yes

But, those days probably equate to a total of 20 days maybe.

If we say I’m average 30 days in a month that’s 240 days.

For 220 days she done the basics. Which is why she’s seen drastic changes.

That’s not…

Starving
Cutting out foods
Exercising 2 hours a day
Two stepping through her days

It was just about taking her normal life as it is right now and making small changes.

Removing all friction between where she wanted to go and what she needed to do!
