Labour U-turn withdraws Time Capsule ice rink closure
The Labour administration at North Lanarkshire Council has informed the media that the proposed closure of the Time Capsule ice rink has been withdrawn and will not be presented to next Thursday’s meeting of all Councillors. They also suggest any proposed closure will not go ahead at all but must now provide an assurance and guarantee that their plans for the ice rink closure will not be proposed again.
Councillor Adam Smith, North Lanarkshire SNP Communities spokesperson, said:
“This is a victory for people power, and the credit belongs first and foremost to the community, the clubs, the skaters, the families and every organisation that fought so hard to save the Time Capsule ice rink.
“Despite very little advertisement of the consultation, and despite residents being asked to respond to an extremely long consultation document, more than a thousand people still took the time to make their voices heard. That speaks volumes about the strength of feeling across Coatbridge and North Lanarkshire.
“The council’s own engagement showed overwhelming support for keeping the rink. The public said no to closure, the clubs said no to closure, and Labour have now been forced to listen.
“This is yet another U-turn from Jim Logue after another failed attempt to close a valued local facility. Communities across North Lanarkshire have seen this pattern too often: closure proposals are brought forward, residents are forced to fight for services they rely on, and only after public pressure does Labour retreat.
“Jim Logue’s relentless drive to close local facilities has caused months of unnecessary uncertainty for the clubs, families and young people who depend on the Time Capsule ice rink. They should never have been put through this in the first place.
“This U-turn is welcome, but it must be more than a temporary retreat. The council now needs to give a clear commitment to the long-term sustainability of the ice rink, including proper investment, support for clubs and a plan to grow use of the facility.
“There should be no more threats to close the Time Capsule ice rink. The community has made its position absolutely clear and now deserves a firm guarantee that this valued facility has a secure future.
“The SNP will continue to work with local organisations, clubs and residents to protect the ice rink and ensure it remains part of the Time Capsule for generations to come.”
