Time Trialling is where it all took off for me, I originally started with road racing and then a mix of the TT. This is where I found my strength. Plus fitting it around working and a young family, TT became the way I could optimise my training and maximise the time I had available to train around my lifestyle. If you have followed me for a while you will know that i was a postman for 18 years (before setting MBPC up in 2015) as it worked well to train and around the kids when they were young. I loved TT as it’s a race against yourself, setting yourself targets and learning how to achieve them. Then as the PBs start coming, it becomes addictive to keep striving for more.
…………
Time Trialling, isn’t just great for cyclists alone, they are a great way for Triathletes to see where they are at for the bike leg and a good training tool to mix in. If you’ve been watching the YouTube channel you will see the series of TT that we are currently doing with lots of information on how they work, as they can seem complicated if you’ve never done one before. Or if you’re a cyclist and just coming into TT. My latest video is “How to get started in cycling Time Trials” hopefully it will help some of you want to get started. Check out the channel and have a look at some of the videos.
………..
At MBPC we have some great cycling (and Triathlon)coaches who have many many years of experience in time trialling (and other disciplines) and having to juggle family and work life around really optimising their training and still performing at the top end of the sport. So don’t let thinking that you’ve only got a few hours a week to train that it’s not enough as believe me at the top end of my cycling career I was training on 6-8 hours a week. Optimising your training and the right sessions in the right phase of your training is the key. So if you need any help in this please get in touch. It is this time of year where we start to shift our focus to the winter training and the goals for the following year.

Kona Isn’t Just Another Ironman
It’s easy to think that because you’ve qualified, you simply need to keep doing what got you there. The reality is that Kona presents a completely different challenge.

The heat, humidity, crosswinds, rolling terrain all mean that your preparation needs to be more specific than ever. What worked at your qualifier might not be enough when you’re standing on the Beach in October.

It’s Not Just About Training Harder

One thing we’ve learnt over years of coaching Ironman athletes is that doing more isn’t always doing better.

A good Kona build is about putting the right sessions in at the right time.

A quick round up of the CTT National 50TT this weekend. It was great seeing the team all back on it. We had Laura Davies 1st In the women’s in 1:57:44 and Emily Martin back on it which is great to see, getting 1st road bike in 2:10:21. We had the guys winning the team prize with Tom Lee getting 3rd in 1:44:50, Jake Sargent 5th 1:45:22 and Dylan Griffiths 6th in 1:45:25 and Rob Francis 8th in 1:46:12. Great team work from all.
…………….
Triathlete Alex Jones got 2nd overall in the British Middle Distance Championship, great results.
……….
Coached rider Victoria Stansfield Victoria Stansfield rode the Marmot this weekend and won the fastest female overall. Awesome result.
………
Then a mention to my son Luke Bottrill and friend Mark Fanning who did their first open 10TT Team Time Trial on road bikes with me last night at Mallory Park. He has only ridden a road bike 4 times as he loves riding mountain bikes, but he smashed it. Was a great event and we got 4th overall in a time of 23:23 definitely a proud dad moment, he was buzzing after.

MBPC Coached triathletes by smashing last weekend, Pete reports as follows,

Kate Nimmo raced at the Dambuster event – sadly a foot niggle meant she had to switch from the standard triathlon to the aquabike, but she delivered a great performance. A customary excellent swim (only a few seconds off the fastest swim of the day across all age groups) set up her race. Kate has worked hard on her TT position and descending skills over the winter and spring, which helped propel her to the age group win. An impressive performance and taking the overall win at Dambuster!! especially so given how busy she has been at work. Cotswold Classic next!

Ivan Jones travelled over to the Netherlands to race the IM 70.3 West Friesland race. The goal was to bag a slot for the world champs in Nice, which he did in some style, winning his age group by 26 minutes. Solid swim followed by the fastest bike and run splits in his age group resulted in this impressive performance, even more so given there was little taper as we are focusing on the main goal of the year, Kona.

Great work coach and athletes👊
