I think that ‘the hit’ - simultaneous full extension of ankle, knee and hip whilst contacting the bar and then shrugging, is the part learners find the hardest. The movement is powerful and we are co-ordinating at high speed.

This point is the culmination of the acceleration off the floor, the end of the jump phase, once here everything feels ‘weightless’ as you are immediately next ‘jumping down’ under the bar ready to catch it.

Thinking and feeling from the ground up really helps. On my group courses I maximise the fun for individuals of being a beginner again at something especially learning the Olympic lifts. There are various drills to learn ‘the hit’ and we can use the high pull to release the bar from this moment, so as not needing to catch it. This helps because there are so many things to think about in sequence we need to learn in parts as much as possible.
