We are passionate about encouraging people to play bowls as a sport in the local community. Greville Smyth Community Bowls Club was established in 2011 by a handful of visionary local people who believed there was a place for an open-access bowling club in this vibrant area of south-central Bristol. The green has been a feature of the park for decades, but in 2010 the former traditional bowling cl
ub closed, and there was a real risk that the bowling green would be abandoned and eventually the grass surface would deteriorate beyond repair. With a little financial help from the local community and grants, for which we are very grateful, the green has been maintained to a high standard. We are now several seasons on and we have high hopes of expanding and developing in the years ahead. We believe the Bowling Club is a true community asset for Bedminster and the surrounding areas. Our vision to attract as many people into the game as possible is well reflected in our members: we have a wide range of ages, abilities and backgrounds in our club, who mix well together. By joining you are also helping the green and the club have a better chance of survival. While we do not currently pay rent to Bristol City Council for use of the ground, we do have to cover the annual maintenance costs for the green, which are considerable, so every paid-up member helps us keep going. Our club is unusual in that the average age of our members is probably around 40-45, unlike many other clubs whose members are often much older. Some people come to play and relax at the end of their working day. Older people can come and play without the formality which is often a feature of more traditional bowling clubs. We welcome families to come and play, and we have sets of smaller bowls suitable for children. However, we do ask that children and youngsters under 16 are accompanied by a responsible adult when they come to play. If you’ve played before at other bowls clubs, we hope you’ll appreciate our friendly, relaxed atmosphere and the informality of the club. We don’t expect you to wear special clothes – come as you are – but make sure you’ve got flat shoes to protect teh green. Or play Aussie-style, in bare feet. Membership is just £20 year, with a fee of £3 per session for members, or £5 per session for non-members. You don’t have to join to come and play – we welcome guests who would like to try out the game, but we hope you will think it worth joining once you’ve enjoyed a game or two. Throughout the season we have a number of special events, such as friendly competitions, and barbeques. We have a clubhouse with a basic but useful kitchen and bar area. Hot and cold drinks are normally available when the club is open. We also have table tennis. As well as drop-in sessions we have regular leagues running throughout the year.
