Bristol Pilot Gig Club

Bristol Pilot Gig Club Please like our page! Traditional rowing in beautiful wooden pilot gigs... we race throughout the summer, and compete in the World Gig Championships.

We are a community based Cornish gig rowing club based at Bristol Harbourside. Established in 2007 the club has grown in numbers and from strength to strength. We have a mixed membership of people; social, competitive and youth rowers. We offer rowing to all ages, abilities, genders, shapes and sizes. Our youngest member is 13 and our oldest in their 70s. What is gig rowing? A Cornish Pilot Gig is

a 6 oared, wooden rowing boat. Traditionally gigs were rowed along the coast of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly as a way of getting a pilot with local knowledge of the waters to large sailing ships so that they could navigate them safely into land. The first pilot to the ship would gain the much needed commission, and so these boats were built to be fast. The sport of gig racing began officially in Newquay in 1921. Who can join Bristol Gig Club?
* Anyone new to rowing (ages 12+)
* Anyone experienced in rowing (ages 12+)
* Social and competitive rowers โ€“ we have options for everyone! How do I get involved? Email [email protected] with your name, phone number and whether you have rowed before. For more information on joining please see our website www.bristolgigclub.co.uk
