The tack of a Drascombe Coaster foresail ( also the Longboat Cruiser & Longboat) Designed specifically to fit the tack fitting on the Holt Allen /Holman luff spars - although it takes more time than the usual webbing, we think it is worth the extra work

My thanks to Small Boats on-line magazine for this photo of a 16' 7" Grandalf design, which is a scaled up version of the Chesapeak Light Craft 'Skerry.' Sailing here, well reefed down, in 25 knots of wind. The boat is built by Arwen Marine near Paris and comes complete with water ballast and carbon fibre spars

Mice? Possibly not a mouse, more likely a mink, especially as the sail was left in a boat at Chew Valley SC. This was one of two Mirror spinnakers brought into the loft, the other sail was so badly damaged that it was consigned to the rubbish bin. This one had a number of damaged areas, this one was rectified by inserting a complete new half panel - so the lesson is, do not store your sails in the boat, as it can be very expensive.

The Drascombe Coaster featured in our post dated 4 April, with her sails set, ready for sailing in Chichester harbour. The sails were made from Contender 5.38 cream with 330mm wide panels. In addition to the top two battens, the High Peak mainsail also has three full length battens, while the mizzen is a Batten Roached Mizzen -making this a very distinctive boat.

Just one of the enquiries this week, was for a cover to protect the varnished 'turtle back' on this ex-RNLI lifeboat. The boat is a Liverpool Class design built in 1953 by Groves & Gutteridge of Cowes, and stationed at Runswick from 1954 -1970, where she saved 24 lives. She is now in Watchet Marina undergoing conservation

The photo was taken at 'Penguins' recent re-launch at Cowes, she is a Dragon class boat built by Lallows of Cowes in 1958, and beautifully rebuilt by Mark Rolt in Bristol, who described her as 'a complete basket case'. As a teenager I occasionally crewed on this boat, which was then owned by Donald Bagley of Dale Yacht Club. For more details please see Facebook posts for Bristol Classic Boat Company, 20 March 2026 and 8th July 2025

'Sheldrake' is a recently built wooden boat constructed by Gannon & Benjamin in Vinyard Haven in Massachusetts USA. It is a 19'0" version of Nat Benjamin's 25' Canvasback design, and is currently owned by Mystic Seaport Museum who use it for introducing people to sailing, who I am sure will admire its beautiful set of sails
