When did you last check your buoyancy aid?
Late summer days on the water are tough to beat, but shorter days and changing weather mean safety needs to stay front of mind. With the El Niño all over the news, and potentially rainy weather ahead, it's a great idea to check your kit before your next dawnie on a river on the rise.
- Check your pocket kit: make sure your whistle, river knife, or safety essentials are secured and easy to reach.
- Check for fraying, loose stitching, or sun damage.
- Check your buckles, zips, and quick-release buckles
- Check your foam – it should be firm and not shrunken.
A well-fitting, functional personal floatation device (PFD) is your most important piece of kit every time you hit the water. If it doesn't pass your checks, it might be time to retire your PFD and get yourself a new one. Safety first!
