A Final Bell for Grimsby Martial Arts Academy – A Legacy That Will Never Fade
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the closure of Grimsby Martial Arts Academy, a gym that has stood proudly since 1998, first on Kent Street in Grimsby and later in Cleethorpes.
The decision comes following the loss of our close friend, coach, and co-founder, Mick Blythin, whose presence, passion, and humour have shaped not only the walls of our gym but also the lives of hundreds who trained within them.
Over the years, Grimsby Martial Arts Academy became more than just a training facility, it became a home. A place where friendships were built, champions were made, and the spirit of martial arts was passed from one generation to the next. From unforgettable fight nights at the Beachcomber, filled to capacity, to the early days with the original team of instructors, Mick, Andy, Lee and Laura , the gym grew to earn a respected name not just locally, but throughout the martial arts fraternity.
Whether it was producing champions in kickboxing and karate, training competitive boxers, including Mick’s journey guiding a fighter to an English title fight, or simply helping kids and adults find confidence, discipline, and strength, the Academy stood as a pillar of the community. Many of our students returned with their own children, keeping the spirit alive and strong through the generations.
While the final chapter of the gym now closes, the story of Grimsby Martial Arts Academy, and the larger than life legacy of Mick Blythin, will live on in the memories of those who stepped into our gym, heard his voice encouraging them forward, and felt the belief he had in every person who walked through our doors.
A special thanks must be given to Sara, whose unwavering dedication helped ensure the gym kept going through every high and low.
To all who trained, coached, fought and supported us over the years “thank you.” You helped build something truly special.
We hope you carry that spirit forward in your lives, wherever your journey takes you.
With gratitude and respect,
Andy, Laura, Lee, Sara and the Grimsby Martial Arts Academy family
